D.C. UNITED vs. NEW YORK CITY FC
RFK Stadium | Washington, D.C.
Sunday, Oct. 16 | Week #33 | MLS Game #324
3 pm ET (MLS LIVE, ABC7, YES)
A critical contest in the Final Push for the Playoffs in the Eastern Conference kicks off when D.C. United meet New York City FC on Sunday afternoon at RFK Stadium. United have yet to clinch a place in the 2016 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, but went a long way with a third consecutive victory in their last match, a 2-1 win at Toronto FC on Oct. 1. New York City FC have booked their postseason place in their second season and still have the Supporters' Shield in their sights, winning a second consecutive game in their last league action, a 2-0 win at the Houston Dynamo on Sept. 30.
  • United won their third consecutive game – the first time they’ve won that many games in a row since a four-game winning run in July 2014 – with their 2-1 victory at Toronto FC on Oct. 1. Lamar Neagle scored a pair of goals, his nine goals for the season matching his MLS single-season career-high; Neagle has six goals and two assists over his last seven games.
  • David Villa scored both goals as NYCFC won their second game on the trot, a 2-0 victory at Houston Dynamo on Sept. 30. Villa now has 21 goals for the season, tied atop the MLS Golden Boot standings with the Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips. Villa has scored two goals in back-to-back games; his 39 goals over the last two seasons is the most in Major League Soccer.
  • The teams are meeting for the third time this season, and NYCFC have won the first two, once at each ground. David Villa and Khiry Shelton scored goals four minutes apart early in the second half as NYCFC claimed a 2-0 victory May 8 at RFK Stadium; Villa then netted a late equalizer and Frank Lampard followed with two more goals as NYCFC claimed a 3-2 win Sept. 1 at Yankee Stadium.
  • The teams met twice in New York City FC’s inaugural MLS season, each winning on their home ground. NYCFC won 3-1 on Aug. 13 at Yankee Stadium, and United won 2-1 on Oct. 2 at RFK Stadium.

LAST MEETING (MLS):
  • United took the lead in the 36th minute on a quick transition, as Lloyd Sam made a run to the far post, took a pass from Patrick Nyarko, and finished coolly to put the visitors ahead.
  • It took a mistake for NYCFC to equalize, as D.C. United defender Luke Mishu sent a long back pass toward goalkeeper Bill Hamid -- which was intercepted by David Villa, who raced in alone on goal before slotting home through Hamid's legs.
  • Five minutes later NYCFC took the lead. Villa saw his shot blocked while going down in trying to finish off a long build-up, but Frank Lampard was there to pounce on the loose ball and slam it home.
  • United hit for the leveler a minute into stoppage time, as substitutes Lamar Neagle and Julian Buescher combined, Neagle heading home Buescher's corner kick service.
  • But NYCFC had the last word two minutes later, as Lampard scored his second of the night, taking a feed from substitute Khiry Shelton before slaloming through the box and hitting the winner into the side netting.
