Match Preview: Newcastle Jets vs Brisbane Roar – Are injury ravaged Jets easy prey?

Brisbane travel to Newcastle to face the injury-ravaged Jets on Sunday afternoon, with both sides coming off 1-1 draws last weekend.
Newcastle started brightly at home to last season’s champions and took an early lead through a stunning Wayne Brown strike, only to throw two points away in comical circumstances. Daniel Mullen was taken out by a sliding tackle on the edge of the penalty area from his own goalkeeper Jack Duncan, before Jesse Makarounas gratefully accepted and easily slotted into an empty net from outside the box.
Brisbane, on the other hand, had to earn their 1-1 draw the hard way – snatching a point at home against the Victory thanks to a scrappy goal in a congested penalty area by centre-back Luke DeVere in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time. The Roar made their job even more difficult prior to that, after captain Matt McKay was dismissed for two bookable offences in his 200th A-League match.
Key Battle – Nigel Boogaard vs Jamie Maclaren
With Nigel Boogaard’s central-defensive partner Mullen to join the long term injury list with a medial ligament injury, the already paper-thin Jets are being stretched to the limit. Jamie Maclaren looms as the danger man, with the Brisbane striker scoring in two out of three games in this corresponding fixture last season.
With a second string centre-back needing to step into the void left by Mullen, Boogaard certainly has his work cut out for him and needs to step up even further if Newcastle are any chance of stopping the prolific Roar frontman. With the Jets keeping just one clean sheet in the last 17 A-League matches, this battle holds the key to the outcome.
