Before the match

Shakhtar received Gent as the group leaders after two rounds. Compared to the game against Braga, the Pitmen had three changes made. The team captain Darijo Srna is back to the ranks. Ivan Ordets, who got a cold a few days ago, was replaced by Yaroslav Rakitskyy. And Maksym Malyshev appeared instead of the suspended Fred.

First half

The opponents got off to a cautious start. No side rushed things, carefully preparing their attacking moves. The Pitmen were the first to bring danger, with Taras Stepanenko produced a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty box, but it went wide. And on 12 minutes, the Pitmen opened the scoring. Gent goalkeeper, leaving the goal behind, cleared the ball directly to Viktor Kovalenko, with the Shakhtar midfielder, being some 40 metres away from the opposing goal, analysed the situation and fired it home – 1-0. The Belgians responded with a dangerous attempt by Milicevic. Despite the fairly even game, the Orange-and-Blacks often attacked Gent. Darijo Srna, being perfectly positioned, was shooting from set play, withBernard sending the ball in the wrong direction shortly afterwards. At times, it got dangerous in the realm of Andriy Pyatov. The visitors had a great chance to equalise on 27 minutes. Perbet found himself one-on-one with Shakhtar goalkeeper, but lobbed it past the goal, let alone the keeper. And on 30 minutes, Shakhtar scored the second goal. Marlos launched a counterattack and fed Facundo Ferreyra for the latter to slot it home past the Gent goalie.  He could also give the score a more lopsided look just shortly afterwards. On 37 minutes, the Pitmen’s mentor Paulo Fonseca had to make an emergency substitution. Viktor Kovalenko got injured, with Dentinho coming on to replace him. Even before the half-time break, the Brazilian might get himself on the scoresheet, but his attempt hit the goalpost.

Second half

The opening attack proved successful for the Orange-and-Blacks. MarlosDentinho and Bernard orchestrated a great move. The latter fired a cross home into unguarded net to make it 3-0. On 50 minutes, the substitution player Coulibaly twice found himself spearheading attacks. On both occasions, Gent’s major striking force was inaccurate. The visitors launched an all-out attacking move, so Shakhtar players got more open spaces for counterattacking. The hyper-active Marlos found himself in the midst of danger more frequently than the others. The visitors also had a few threatening attacks. All the same Coulibaly struck from outside the penalty area only to see his attempt just touch the crossbar. On 74 minutes, Bernard was substituted by Taison whose first touch made the ball strike the back of the opposing net for the fourth time. Facundo Ferreyra made a perfect assist, with everything left for the Brazilian to do was just netting one. Marlos could give the score an even more lopsided look then. But his bent shot hit the post after drawing an incredible circle in the air. On 79 minutes, Paulo Fonseca replaced one of the match heroes Ferreyra for Eduardo. At the end of the match, the Pitmen managed to excel again. On 85 minutes, Maksym Malyshev played one-two with Marlos and fired a smasher into the corner to make it 5-0. It is Shakhtar midfielder’s debut goal in European competitions. The referee’s final whistle registered a whitewash thrashing by the Orange-and-Blacks.

Shakhtar are to play their next game on October 23 in Kropivnytskyi. In the Premier League Round 12, they are meeting with Zirka.
