Arsenal missed out on the chance to sign Cristiano Ronaldo prior to his move to Manchester United in 2003according to former Gunners scout Damien Comolli.
The 31-year-old made a £12.2 million switch to Old Trafford 13 years ago, following Ronaldo’s impressive performance for Sporting Lisbon in a friendly match against Sir Alex Ferguson’s United, and went on to score 117 times for the Red Devils in 290 appearances.
He won three Premier League crowns and a UEFA Champions League in his six-year stay in Manchester, but it could have been different had Arsenal had the money to pull off a deal for the Portuguese star.
‘The first time I saw Ronaldo, it was at the Montaigu tournament, he was 15. He played against Japan before and I thought: Who the hell is this?
‘He came twice to the training ground. Nobody knows that. He met Thierry [Henry], who was his idol.
‘But when it came to making the transfer, there was no money.’

Ronaldo left United in 2009 and has since gone on to become one of the best players in the world at Real Madrid, where he has netted 354 times in 315 appearances, in turn becoming the club’s all-time top scorer ahead of Raul.
Arsenal fans are sure to wonder what might have been had the Gunners had the funds to pull off the deal for Ronaldo, who so famously ended Arsenal’s Champions League hopes with an inspired performance in their semi-final at the Emirates Stadium in 2009.
