Prior to kick off, the Singapore and Thai national football teams observed a minute of silence to pay their respects to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's founding Prime Minister who died on Monday at the age of 91. Thai supporters also applauded when Singaporean and Thai officials made speeches commemorating the late Singapore statesman.

Before the match, the Lions were seen warming up in a commemorative T-shirt that showed that sombre events back home were not far from their minds. Staff from the Football Association of Singapore say the team learned about the passing of the country's first prime minister Lee Kuan Yew on Monday when they were on their way to Thailand, and so the players decided to print these T-shirts in tribute to Mr Lee.
“Back home everybody is mourning the loss of Mr Lee," said footballer Hariss Harun. "So since we are playing away, we want to remember Mr Lee and all the good he has done for Singapore. I think this is a small initiative we can do. We all are saddened by this loss so we are trying to as Singaporeans through football and we will try to do our best."
The friendlies were set up to mark 50 years of bilateral relations between Singapore and Thailand. This match took place at the His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary, 5 December 2007 Sports Complex, in Thailand's northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province.
