Irbid: Al Jazeera booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2015 AFC Cup with a 2-0 win over Wad Alness on Tuesday that guaranteed the Jordanian side a place in the top two in Group B.
A goal in each half from Ra’ed Fraeh and Mohammad Tannous secured all three points for Al Jazeera, moving Issa Al Turk’s’s team on to nine points from five matches and opening up a four point gap between themselves and Wadi Al Nass, who remain in third place in the group.
“The match was tough and it was important to get a win in order to go on top of the group and secure our place in the knockout stage,” said Al Turk. “We went into the match with great concentration and controlled the proceedings and created many scoring chances.
“We scored two goals and after the second goal we tried to slow things because we wanted to avoid any injuries. We achieved our target from the match and hopefully we can win the last match and finish on top of the group.”
Al Jazeera meet Al Shorta on Matchday Six and a draw will be enough to ensure they take first place while the Iraqis need a win to guarantee they will advance to the knockout phase.
The Jordanians took the lead against Wad Alness in the 26th minute after Ahmad Saleh found his way past two defenders, only to see his shot blocked by goalkeeper Tawfiq Abuhammad. However, Fraeh was on hand to capitalize as he scored with a first-time effort from the edge of the penalty area.
Al Jazeera dominated the opening 45 minutes and it was a similar story in the second half and, five minutes after the restart, they doubled their advantage thanks to Tannous.
The 23-year-old midfielder picked the ball up from Loiy Emran before hitting a powerful left-foot strike beyond Abuhammad to increase his side’s lead and put the result beyond any doubt.
