Memphis Depay 'very talented', admits Liverpool boss Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has refused to deny his club are attempting to sign the PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay and described him as a ‘very talented’ player.

The Reds are understood to be competing with Manchester United and several other top clubs in Europe for the Netherlands international’s signature this summer.

Rodgers has confirmed that attacking players are a priority for the Reds in the next transfer window, especially a striker, and admitted there will be a notable turnaround of players in pre-season.

"I wouldn't like to confirm either way [about Depay]," Rodgers said. "The kid is a very talented player.

"There's going to be a whole raft of players that I'm sure will be looked at and then it will be up to the club if they're affordable and available.

"It's clear we need the goal threat for next year. We've identified that a striker is a priority but we'll have to see availability first and then take it from there.

"I've got a great squad of players. But the natural process for some players would be that they want to move on anyway, and we've had some for a couple of years who maybe haven’t played as much."

Rodgers has previously admitted concern that Liverpool will struggle to attract the very best players without Champions League football, and the club are currently seven points short of the top four.

But he said: "It would be for the players to decide whether we’re an attractive club.

"If it's right for the player and the project is right for them to come and learn and develop then, if we're not in the Champions League, players will still want to come.

"Hopefully we can regroup again, get some quality starters in for the summer, and go on another great adventure next season - and hopefully get back in there."

Van Marwijk: "De Boer wellicht te ver gegaan"

Ajax-trainer Frank de Boer reageerde zich afgelopen week af op zijn spelersgroep na het matige spel van de laatste weken. Bij Studio Voetbal begreep oefenmeester Bert van Marwijk de woede-uitbarsting maar al te goed.

"Dit was niet gepland. Frank ergerde zich op dat moment en dan ontploft hij. Ik ben fan van hem. Hij is de enige bindende factor binnen Ajax." Ook zal De Boer, volgens de oud-bondscoach van Oranje, kritisch naar zichzelf moeten kijken.

"Waar je wel kritisch naar kunt kijken, is de manier van spelen. De verrassing en spontaniteit ontbreken. Frank is een coach die werkt aan een team en speelwijze, tot het bezetene aan toe. Alles moet kloppen, tot in de puntjes. Ik heb het zelf ook meegemaakt, maar hij is er misschien te ver in gegaan", besloot Van Marwijk.

"Mijn contract bij Ajax wordt niet verlengd"

Ruben Ligeon hoeft niet meer terug te keren bij Ajax. De Amsterdammers willen de verdediger het liefst deze zomer verkopen, zo meldt de huurling van NAC zelf.

"Ik heb deze week van Marc Overmars gehoord dat mijn contract bij Ajax niet wordt verlengd en dat ik zal worden verkocht. Dat is het beleid met spelers die nog maar één jaar onder contract staan", zo liet de mandekker weten aan De Telegraaf.

"Mijn doel was nog steeds te slagen bij Ajax", ging Ligeon verder met zijn verhaal. "Als die kans niet komt, kun je niet anders dan je hoofd omhoog houden en doorgaan. Ja, dat is wel even een klap die ik moet verwerken, maar dat zal niet ten koste gaan van NAC", beloofde de Ajacied.

"Als je bij Feyenoord wint, hoor je daar niet"

Bart Vriends heeft er alle vertrouwen in dat Go Ahead Eagles zich gaat handhaven. De ploeg stevent op de play-offs voor promotie/degradatie af, maar de captain maakt zich geen zorgen.

"We moeten ons afsluiten voor de negatieve manier waarop de pers of de fans ons wegzetten. Ik vertrouw op het plan dat onze staf heeft uitgedokterd om ons fris aan de nacompetitiestart te krijgen", vertelde de verdediger aan het Algemeen Dagblad.

"Wij kennen als geen ander de sentimenten van de nacompetitie. Nu is het zaak dat wij ons niet laten intmideren door de strijd die de Jupiler League-ploegen aan de dag zullen leggen. Qua strijd moeten wij hetzelfde brengen als zij, vervolgens moet het kwaliteitsverschil de doorslag geven."

Eredivisie round-up: AZ in contention for European spot

AZ Alkmaar remain in contention to clinch the automatic Europa League spot in the Eredivisie with a 2-0 win at FC Twente on Sunday.

Wesley Hoedt and Aron Johannsson were the men on target in the first half, and the visitors held on for victory despite the 70th-minute dismissal of Nemanja Gudelj.

The result saw John van den Brom's fourth-placed side move three points behind third-placed Feyenoord with two games of the regular season remaining.

Feyenoord could only manage a 1-1 draw at FC Groningen on Sunday, Jordy Clasie's 27th-minute opener cancelled out on the stroke of half-time by Tjaronn Chery.

The Rotterdam outfit could not find a second goal, and had salt rubbed in the wounds when they lost substitute Khalid Boulahrouz to a last-minute red card.

Ajax, already assured second place behind champions PSV Eindhoven, were also held to a 1-1 draw - and needed a 90th-minute equaliser from substitute Kolbeinn Sigthorsson to salvage a share of the spoils at PEC Zwolle, who had taken a 49th-minute lead through Jesper Drost.

Also in the Dutch top flight on Sunday, relegated FC Dordrecht drew 0-0 at home to Cambuur Leeuwarden.
