United States roster for 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup full of US Youth Soccer alums
FRISCO, Texas- ( All 23 players U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Jill Ellis named to the roster for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup have ties to US Youth Soccer, including 22 who are US Youth Soccer ODP alumni and several players who participated in the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series.
The U.S. Women’s National Team is looking to win its third World Cup title this summer in Canada after finishing as the runner-up to Japan in 2011. The United States enters the competition on the heels of a first-place finish in March’s Algarve Cup, which featured several of the teams that will be competing in Canada.
“The players selected have the confidence, experience and desire to help us win a world championship,” said Ellis. “We had an excellent group to pick from and at the end of the last camp, I complemented all the players on how much they pushed each other and competed to make this selection challenging."
The United States will kick off the World Cup at 7:30 p.m. ET on June 8 when it opens up Group D play against Australia in Winnipeg. The team will stay in Winnipeg to take on Sweden at 8 p.m. ET on June 12 before finishing up group play against Nigeria at 8 p.m. ET on June 16 in Vancouver.
The roster features 22 players who developed their skills as members of US Youth Soccer ODP, the nation's original player identification program that has continued its tradition of elite competition and player development for more than 30 years. Among the 22 US Youth Soccer ODP alumnae is Abby Wambach, who enters the World Cup as the international scoring leader with 178 career goals for the United States.
Well over half of the players on the World Cup roster helped their club teams to success in the US Youth Soccer National Championships Series, with several advancing to the Regional and National Championships. Forwards Amy Rodriguez (Laguna Hills Eclipse) and Christen Press (Slammers FC) each helped their teams win two US Youth Soccer National Championships during standout youth soccer careers.
Morgan Brian, the youngest player on the U.S. roster, participated in several US Youth Soccer programs, including the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, US Youth Soccer ODP and the US Youth Soccer National League. Brian’s Under-19 Clay County Soccer Club (FL) side won the 2012 US Youth Soccer National Championship.
