Royal Wahingdoh FC 4-2 Salgaocar FC: Seityasen's hat-trick piles pressure on Bagan and Bengaluru
An inspirational performance by Seityasen Singh keeps the Shillong-based team in the title hunt while Salgaocar get themselves embroiled in the relegation battle...
In their final home game of the season, Royal Wahingdoh defeated Salgaocar FC 4-2 in a thrilling round 20 I-League 2014-15 encounter played at the Nehru stadium in Shillong, on Sunday.
Seityasen Singh scored a hat-trick (11', 68', 83') for the Royals while the Goans were allowed to equalise only once through Douhou Pierre (56'). Densill Theobald found the back of the net in the 59th minute with Darryl Duffy (90+2') scoring a consolation goal for the visitors.
Santosh Kashyap made three changes to his side's starting line-up as C. Lallawmazuala, Naoba Singh and Seityasen Singh replaced Govin Singh, Bekay Bawar and Seong-Yong Kim while Derrick Pereira brought on Subrata Paul and Darryl Duffy in place of Karanjit Singh and Nicolau Colaco for the Goan outfit respectively.
The home team had the better start with Jackichand Singh and Seityasen combining well in exploiting the wide spaces. Wahingdoh soon broke the deadlock in the 11th minute. Densill Theobald intercepted the ball in the midfield and released Jackichand in attack who was quick to spot Seityasen on the right. With only the rival custodian to beat, the number 11 placed the ball with consummate ease on the right of Subrata Paul.
Seityasen and Jackichand were at it again with the latter free on the left side but the pass was a bit too heavy.
Crossing over, it took Salgaocar 10 minutes to find the equaliser through a sublime free-kick by Pierre who found the back of the net through a difficult angle after the Ivory Coast midfielder was brought down by Reagan Singh.
Against the run of play, when nobody expected him to take a shot after he was fed by Lalchawnkima 10-to-12 yards outside the box, Theobald sent a scorching right-footer that blazed past the right side of Subrata Paul who could do little to keep the ball from entering the back of the net.
Minutes after, Gurjinder Kumar saw his effort miss the right post go begging for Salgaocar, Wahingdoh made it 3-1 to literally take the game away from Pereira's side.
With Seong-Yong and Jackichand leading the attack, the former released a pass to Seityasen who controlled the ball for a couple of seconds before slotting it past Subrata Paul to complete his brace in the 68th minute.
Seityasen went on to score another in the 82nd minute as he tapped in an inch-perfect cross from the left by Jackichand who set up the hat-trick hero on all three occasions.
Darryl Duffy could only claim a consolation goal in injury time as Salgaocar (17) don't have enough points separating themselves from the bottom placed teams while Royal Wahingdoh now have 30 points from 18 matches and trailing league leaders Mohun Bagan by only two points though the Kolkata side have three matches in hand.
Mumbai FC replaced Nidhin Lal in goal with Sanjiban Ghosh. Justine Stephen was relegated to the bench as Rahul Bheke slotted in central defense. Allan Dias, Pradeep Mohanraj and Shilton D' Silva also came into the match with Ashutosh Mehta was suspended.
Sanjoy Sen, meanwhile named an unchanged line-up from the one that won 2-0 against Pune with Pierre Boya still out with a muscle injury. Jeje Lalpekhlua continued upfront with Balwant Singh suspended.
The away side could have gone ahead in the third minute itself after Jeje Lalpekhlua was fouled by Rahul Bheke just outside the box. Katsumi Yusa's freekick though saw his free-kick crash off the crossbar.
With Mumbai looking dangerous down the left, Mohun Bagan relied mostly on long balls which Chika Wali and co. dealt with ease.
In the 25th minute, it was Pradeep Mohanraj who had a glorious chance to put his side ahead after getting in between the central defenders but he could only head Mohammed Rafi's cross over the bar.
It was Denson Devadas who had a pop at goal in the next minute after some good work by Manish Bhargav down the right. While Sanjiban Ghosh spilled the shot, Bheke cleared the danger in time.
The rest of the half saw a couple of aimless long ranged efforts from both sides without much of an end product.
The second half was however a different affair together. It was the Yellow and Blues who got out of the blocks the faster of the two sides. They got their reward within four minutes after the restart as Jayesh Rane's flag kick was effortlessly headed into goal by Vashum who managed to get himself in front of Debjit Majumder in goal. Josimar too played a part as he did not give the Mohun Bagan custodian much space to move.
Khalid Jamil's side could have doubled their lead only minutes later as Rafi's angled freekick only needed a touch inside the box as the ball went out of play.
On the hour mark Sanjiban pulled off a smart save as he got a hand to Katsumi's angled shot from the right which was destined to end up in the far corner.
A minute after the hour mark saw the Kolkata giants failing to convert any of the three consecutive chances they created. Following a Sony Norde corner, Dhanachandra's header was kept out by Sanjiban who was called into action again as he parried Denson's header from close range. It was Jeje then whose shot towards goal was kept out by a Mohanraj on the goal line.
The Mariners finally had the reward for all their pressure as Mumbai sat back in the 76th minute. A Sony Norde corner to the far post was completely missed by Sanjiban Ghosh allowing an unmarked Dhanachandra to take a touch and smash the ball in goal, to equalise for Mohun Bagan.
This was followed by an ambitous long ranger from the Bagan left back from about 30 yards that was palmed over the bar by an alert Sanjiban.
Katsumi won a free-kick in stoppage time but his weak effort failed to go past the two-man wall. In spite of eight minutes of time being added on, Mohun Bagan failed to find their way past a resolute Mumbai defense.
With the result, Mohun Bagan are four points ahead of second-placed Bengaluru FC while Mumbai FC have amassed 17 points from as many games and have moved to the seventh spot on the table.

Romeo Fernandes becomes first Indian to play in Brazil
The 22 year-old made his professional debut for Brazilian club Atletico PR on Saturday…
Romeo Fernandes created history when he made his much anticipated professional debut in Brazil for Clube Atletico Paranaense at home to Nacional PR in the last round of the Campeonato Paranaense on Saturday.
The Goan footballer became the first Indian to feature in Brazilian professional football. Since joining on loan from Dempo Sports Club, the 22 year-old has largely trained with the reserves but was put through his paces alongside the senior players over the last few days.
Romeo was expected to make an appearance in the second half of the encounter with Nacional and was introduced in the 69th minute, replacing Rafinha.
Atletico, who lead the standings, were already 4-0 up when the Indian youngster took to the pitch and they eventually dispatched their opponents 5-0.
After impressing in the Indian Super League with FC Goa, Romeo's Brazilian debut only adds to the recent progress of Indian players abroad. Last month, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made his professional debut to Staebek FC in Norway to become the first Indian player to play a competitive match for a European club.
