Liverpool transfers: Manchester City confident of signing Raheem Sterling to £200,000-a-week contract

Outgoing champions will offer £55m-rated contract rebel a £165k a week deal with incentives that'll boost his pay if he helps them win trophies

Manchester City believe they are close to winning the race for £55million-rated Liverpool contract rebel Raheem Sterling, writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People.
It's understood the Blues' chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain have identified speedy Sterling as the young star to spearhead a squad shake-up at the Etihad this summer.
The duo know they have to act fast and be ambitious with their transfer deals this summer after taking flak for a raft of mediocre signings during their spell at the club. And they are believed to be going all-out to make sure Sterling becomes a headline signing once the season finishes.
The 20-year-old England forward has been under fire for turning down the Reds' offer of a £100,000-a-week new contract. Sterling has told Kop boss Brendan Rodgers he won't discuss his future with the club until this season is over.City believe they will get the youngster tied down quickly once the campaign ends with promises of a £165k-a-week deal, including incentives that could see him earn £200,000 a-week if the Blues win trophies, and Champions League football.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini has admitted the club will target English stars this summer - with Sterling their main priority.
And with Liverpool in disarray after a disappointing season, outgoing champions City are confident they have done enough to lure Sterling to the blue side of Manchester.

Arsenal news and transfers: Blow in Gunners' pursuit for Valencia defender Jose Luis Gaya?

PLUS: Arsene Wenger urges Jose Mourinho to show him more respect AND target Alexandre Lacazette believes he will remain at Lyon

Here are all the latest Gunners stories from today's Daily Mirror...

Wenger calls for Mourinho respect...

Arsene Wenger has hit back at Jose Mourinho and accused him of lacking respect.
Mourinho responded to 'boring, boring Chelsea' taunts from Arsenal fans last week by saying: “’Boring’ I think is 10 years without a title.
“That's very boring. You support the club and you're waiting, waiting, waiting for so many years without a Premier League title, so that's very boring.”
That was a clear reference from Blues boss Mourinho to Arsenal last winning the title in 2004.
Wenger responded by saying: "The biggest thing of managers is to respect each other and some people have to improve on that.
"You can have incidents with other managers. It is a bit heated when you fight directly with them but in the end time heals and what is the most important is to respect each other as much as you can."

...Mourinho shrugs off Wenger call

Jose Mourinho refused to respond to Wenger's claim that he needed “to improve his respect” after the Blues boss mocked the Gunners’ title drought.
Asked for his response to the Frenchman's comments during his lunchtime press briefing at Chelsea’s Cobham HQ, Mourinho simply shook his head.
The pair's rivalry has stepped up a notch in recent weeks, prior to last Sunday's 0-0 draw between the two sides at the Emirates.

That shutout led to chants of "Boring, boring Chelsea", from the home support but the Portuguese hit back.
He said: "You know, boring I think is ten years without a title. That's very boring.
"You support the club and you're waiting, waiting, waiting for so many years without a Premier League title, so that's very boring. But maybe they aren't singing to us."

Wilshere interviews Pele

Jack Wilshere has been rubbing shoulders with football royalty - after he was given the opportunity to interview Brazil legend Pele.
Arguably the greatest player to ever kick a ball, Pele won his first World Cup in 1958, before following it up with victories four years later in 1962, and again in 1970.
Wilshere, who wears the same number 10 jersey the Brazilian made famous, quizzed him on his international glories, as well as his early career and the famous jersey.
Asked what his proudest moment is, Pele said: "My first World Cup in Sweden, when I was 17 years old, and my last World Cup against Italy in 1970."
His hero? "My hero was my father. He played as a centre forward for Sao Paulo."
Pele also recently revealed he snubbed the advances of Real Madrid and Barcelonato stay with Santos in Brazil.

Pacquiao is a Gunner

For anyone planning on watching the fight of the century, there are few key things they have to do before Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao enter that Las Vegas ring.
Figuring out how you're going to stay awake is one issue (fear not - our expert has already figured that out for you). But most crucially of all, who are you going to support? Do you back the deliberately provocative and unbeaten Money Man, or do you cheer for the big-hearted God of the Philippines?
It's a quandry. But if you're an Arsenal fan, this should answer the question for you.
