The first round of group phase matches in the CAF Confederation Cup this past weekend saw three home victories out of four, with Orlando Pirates’ win in the Congo proving to be the only exception.
The Buccaneers claimed a 1-0 away win on Saturday in Dolisie when they defeated AC Leopards, with defender Happy Jele’s goal just before the hour mark proving to be enough for the South African club to claim three precious points on the road.
They are co-top of Group B with Egyptian giants Zamalek, who beat CS Sfaxien 1-0 in Cairo thanks to a late goal from Abdoulaye Cisse.
Group A is led by reigning Confederation Cup champions Al Ahly, who crushed Tunisia’s Esperance 3-0. A brace from in-form attacking midfielder Abdallah El-Saied either side of half time and a late goal from substitute Moemen Zakareya earn the Egyptian giants the three points against their rivals.
The other Group A match saw Etoile Sahel edge Stade Malien in Sousse, with Baghdad Bounedjah scoring the only goal of the match with just over 20 minutes to play.
The next round of group stage matches will be held on the weekend of 10-12 July.
