Abdoulaye Cissé came off the bench to secure a 1-0 win for Zamalek over CS Sfaxien in their Caf Confederations Cup Group B opener at the Petro Sport Stadium in Cairo, on Saturday evening.
The Burkina Faso international netted a 90th minute winner for the hosts, four minutes after making his way on to the park as the White Knights registered their first win over the three-time CAFCC winners in 12 years.
Chances were at a premium in the first half with both goalkeepers untested in the early exchanges.
Sfaxien would have the first chance at goal with 24 minutes on the clock. Houssem Louati testing Ahmed El-Shennawy who was up to the task, guiding the ball away from danger.
The hosts first shot in anger fell to Mostafa Fathi three minutes before the break - the Egyptian midfielder seeing his effort fly inches wide of Rami Jeridi's goal.
Zamalek would take control of the game after the interval with Ahmed Tawfik squandering the first of a succession of chances for the home side. He would send his looping header wide before Fathy missed the target with Jeridi stranded in the Sfaxien goal just short of the hour mark.
The 'Juventus of the Arabs' shot stopper would then deny Ahmed Aly, who failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity before diving at full stretch to keep Yassine Merieh from netting what would have been an unfortunate own goal.
Zamalek would finally break the deadlock in the final minute of regulation time.
Omar Gaber found Cisse who was left with the easiest of finishes from close range to down the Tunisian giants - the goal was the strikers first since September last year.
Orlando Pirates got Group B underway with a 1-0 win over AC Leopards in Dolisie.
The Buccaneers next face Zamalek in Nelspruit on July 11.
