Otamendi signs on for Manchester City
Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi has signed for Manchester City, the Premier League side announced on Thursday after a deal was agreed with his current side Valencia.
The 27-year-old has signed a five-year contract although no financial details of the transfer were released.
Otamendi will bolster central defensive ranks at City that include two familiar faces in former Porto team-mate Eliaquim Mangala and international colleague Martin Demichelis, as well as captain Vincent Kompany.
Otamendi told the club's website, www.mcfc.co.uk: "I am here to give my best, to fight game by game and push City to the highest peaks for as long as possible, and I wish we will be able to win several cups and titles.
"That's most important. To be here inside a club that looks so wonderful from the outside is a dream."
Valencia were believed to be hoping to use the sale of the player to write off part of the fee they still owe City for striker Alvaro Negredo.
Otamendi joined the Spanish club from Porto just a year ago. Initial reports at the weekend claimed Valencia wanted to offset his loss by signing Mangala on loan in exchange but City had no intention of allowing the Frenchman to leave Eastlands.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini said: "Nicolas Otamendi was arguably the best defender in La Liga last season and so naturally I'm delighted to have added a player of his quality.
"He is an established international for one of the best nations in world football and I have no doubt that he has the right mentality to fit into a squad where he will find many familiar faces, including Eliaquim and Fernando who he played alongside in Portugal.
Otamendi has 25 caps for Argentina and was a member of the side that reached the Copa America final in the summer alongside new City team-mates Demichelis, Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta.
I've not been good enough, admits Rooney
Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has admitted that his performances to date this season have not been up to scratch, but he is confident the goals will start flowing soon.
With Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao having left Old Trafford during the close season and Javier Hernandez out of favour, Rooney has started the season as the lone striker in manager Louis van Gaal's 4-2-3-1 system.
He is yet to score in three games, leading to questions about his suitability for the role, but while he accepts that criticism of his performances is just, he is targeting Saturday's game at home to Newcastle United as an opportunity to make amends.
"I've had one bad game this season and everyone's all over it," Rooney told reporters after United's 3-1 win over Club Brugge in the home leg of their Champions League play-off tie on Tuesday.
"I know, I've had that throughout my career, but hopefully at the weekend I can get off the mark.
"I'm an honest guy. I know when I don't play well and against Aston Villa (where United won 1-0 on Friday) I was below my standards. I know that.
"I thought I had a good game tonight (Tuesday), could have had a goal or two, but that's football."
He added: "It's early on in the season. Three games in, it's time for me to keep going. I've experienced this before and the goals will come. I know that."
Rooney, who turns 30 in October, has not started a season as United's main striker since 2011, but he rejected the suggestion that it may take time for him to re-adjust.
"My mind's clear. I know how to play the role," he said. "It's just a case of getting the chances and taking them, which I'm hopefully going to do soon."
Rooney's new team-mate Memphis Depay stole the show against Club Brugge, opening his account for the club with two stylish first-half strikes before setting up substitute Marouane Fellaini for a stoppage-time header that put United firmly in control of the tie.
But Rooney gave a fleeting glimpse of his ability in the second half, cushioning a cross from Luke Shaw into Depay's path with an exquisite, volleyed back-heel, only for the Dutchman to blaze his shot over the bar.
Rooney has played in three Champions League finals, winning one, in 2008, and scoring in defeat against Barcelona in 2011, and after a season out of the tournament, he was delighted to hear the competition's theme music once again.
"It's what you want to play in," said the England captain, who scored 14 goals for United last season.
"It's a great feeling, stood there before the game when the music comes on and that's when you know how special a tournament it is.
"Still, there's an important game for us next week to go and finish the job off, but today (Tuesday) was a good result for us in terms of starting well."
Swiss star Inler joins Leicester
English Premier League side Leicester City announced on Wednesday they have signed Swiss midfielder Gokhan Inler from Napoli.
The player has signed a three-year deal to become the Foxes' sixth signing of the summer.
Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri has been on the lookout for a top midfielder since Argentine international Esteban Cambiasso decided to leave the club.
The Italian, who took over as coach in the summer, has already signed N'Golo Kante from French club Caen to beef up his midfield options.
Inler joins for an undisclosed fee ahead of Saturday's Premier League visit of Tottenham.
Leicester have won both of their opening games under Ranieri, beating Sunderland and West Ham, to sit joint top of the table.
Asked about transfers last week, Ranieri said: "One more. A midfielder. I think one is enough. Of course, if two arrive then I'm happy."
Inler joined Napoli from Udinese in 2011 and played for Switzerland and Turkey at under-21 level before he opted to represent the Swiss and has won 84 caps.
Arsenal’s Wellington Silva joins Bolton on loan
Wellington Silva, the 22-year-old Brazilian that has yet to feature for the senior Arsenal team, has secured a season-long loan to Championship side Bolton. Silva will be available for team selection ahead of this weekend’s round of matches.
Bolton manager Neil Lennon confirmed the signing of the Arsenal winger following their 1-0 defeat at MK Dons. “Silva should have been playing tonight but we missed the registration time by three minutes,” Lennon told BBC Radio Manchester. “He would have made a big difference to the way we wanted to play, so he will definitely come into contention on Saturday. We think he is a good player and will make us better.”
Silva has endured a tough five-and-a-half years since a fee was agreed between Arsenal and Brazilian club Fluminense for the player’s signature in 2009. The deal was delayed until the following year due to Silva’s age and then there were issues with a work permit. The FA, who originally sanctioned a work permit, backtracked on their decision and the Gunners were forced to loan Silva until the matter was resolved.
It was not until April of 2015 that Silva was issued a Spanish passport, which allowed him to work in the United Kingdom. Although he finally received the passport, Silva was in the middle of a loan spell at La Liga side Almeria. The Brazilian made 35 total appearances for the Spanish club during the 2014-15 season, recording seven assists (six in league play).
Despite the frustrations over the work permit, Silva reportedly agreed to a new long-term contract with Arsenal before making the loan switch to Bolton. The Wanderers will be the sixth club that Silva has gone on loan to since 2010. Silva is the 12th Arsenal player to currently be loaned out since the beginning of the summer (assuming Gedion Zelalem’s preposed temporary move to Rangers goes through).
