Jack Wilshere: Arsenal midfielder set to miss England Euro qualifiers

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is unlikely to be fit for England's European Championship qualifiers next month, says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
Wilshere, 23, is back in training after suffering a hairline fracture to his right ankle on 1 August.
"It is too early to think he would be playing for England, but after the international break he has a chance," said Wenger.
England visit San Marino on 5 September and host Switzerland three days later.

Arsenal "not close" to new signings

Wenger said he will not make new signings for the sake of it, and there were no incoming transfers on the horizon.
"I expect signings like you, but at the moment we are not close," the Frenchman said at a press conference before Monday night's home Premier League match with Liverpool.
"We want to develop players as well rather than overthinking whether to buy.
"I am not against buying when it is a plus for your team. If it is just to buy a player at the level of the players that you have to make people happy, I am not ready for that."

Chelsea's Jose Mourinho denies competing with Man Utd for Pedro

Manager Jose Mourinho said Chelsea did not intend to "beat" Manchester United to the signing of £21m Pedro.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward flew to Barcelona to try to finalise a deal, but persuasion from Mourinho was one of the factors that led the Pedro to choosing the Blues.
"I only want to beat Man United on the pitch," said the Portuguese boss.
"I don't want to go in that direction. Our job is not to get a player another club wants."
Former Barcelona forward Pedro and Chelsea's other new signing this week, ex-Augsburg left-back Baba Rahman, are in the squad for Sunday's trip to West Brom.
The champions only have one point from their first two games, and Mourinho believes the "opportunity window" has allowed him to strengthen the squad.
"While the transfer window is open, it's the opportunity window," he added.
"We have a very good young left-back with potential and have one of the best attacking players in the world."

Losing to managers whose surname begins with 'P'

Mourinho faces counterpart Tony Pulis this weekend. A loss at The Hawthorns would be the seventh successive league game that the Chelsea boss will have been beaten by a manager whose surname begins with 'P'.
When asked about that statistic, Mourinho said: "If I was superstitious I'd say that when I start the season 2-2 I go on to win the treble.
"It was 2-2 Porto v Belenenses, 2-2 Inter v Bari and 2-2 v Swansea this season."

Manchester City's Pablo Zabaleta out for month with knee injury

Manchester City right-back Pablo Zabaleta faces up to a month out with a knee injury suffered in training.

The 30-year-old Argentine was an unused substitute in City's opening two Premier League games following his involvement in the Copa America.
He could miss up to six games, with Bacary Sagna likely to continue to fill the right-back spot.
"Pablo Zabaleta has a problem in his knee, with the ligament," manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed.
Zabaleta told the club website:   "It's the first time in 12 years of senior football that I've ever been injured like this so it's a blow, especially at the start of the season."
Left-back Gael Clichy and midfielder Fabian Delph returned to training this week, although it is not known if they will be considered for Sunday's Premier League game at Everton.

Louis van Gaal 'trusts' Ed Woodward with Man Utd targets

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says he trusts executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward with club transfers.
Woodward has overseen deals that have brought in Matteo Darmian, Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer.
But United missed out on transfer target Pedro, with Barcelona's Spain winger, 28, opting to join Premier League rivals Chelsea.
"Every day I am updated by him and I trust him," said Van Gaal.
"I have the idea you want to separate Ed Woodward with me. Never. Never."
Van Gaal was speaking at a news conference ahead of United's home game with Newcastle on Saturday.
He added: "I don't think [the critics] have to doubt Ed Woodward because he has proven already for many, many years he is the right person on the right spot."
Van Gaal also said he did not want to "interfere" regarding the club's interest in Southampton's 23-year-old midfielder Sadio Mane.
He added: "I cannot answer that question either because I cannot interfere. I don't want to interfere. It's for Ed Woodward doing the things and he does it very well, I think."

Schweinsteiger start?

The Dutchman did suggest Schweinsteiger, 31, may be in line for his first Premier League start.
The Germany international replaced Michael Carrick at half-time during United's 3-1 win against Club Brugge on Tuesday.
"Maybe it shall happen tomorrow," Van Gaal told MUTV.
"We have seen a solution in rotating our [second] captain, Michael Carrick, with Schweinsteiger.
"I think it's a very good solution because we can spare them both for the big moments."
One man who will not feature is goalkeeper David De Gea, 24, who is linked with a move to Real Madrid.
"We shall evaluate [whether he can play] after 1 September," said Van Gaal.
