Chofu: Gamba Osaka boss Kenta Hasegawa said the defending Japanese champions had only themselves to blames for their 2-1 loss to FC Tokyo, as the 2015 AFC Champions League quarter-finalists’ poor run of form in the second stage of the J.League continued on Sunday.
Australia international Nathan Burns, who was part of the Socceroos’ 2015 AFC Asian Cup-winning squad, set up Takuji Yonemoto for the opener with quarter-of-an-hour at the Ajinimoto Stadium played before going on to net FC Tokyo’s 59th minute winner after Patric had drawn Gamba level two minutes into the second-half.
“We deserved to lose today [Sunday],” Hasegawa (pictured) said in an article in the Japan Times.
“After we equalized we had enough opportunities but we just didn’t take them. We know FC Tokyo are a strong team on the counter-attack but we didn’t defend them properly.
“It’s one thing if we lose while doing everything that we had to do, but that wasn’t the case. Clearly we have plenty of room for improvement. We are getting better in some areas but we need to be more accurate in front of goal.”
Gamba, who have only won twice in the second stage of the J.League will be looking to resolve this when they take on Shimizu S-Pulse on Saturday in their final domestic fixture before the resumption of their ACL campaign.
Gamba continue their quest for a second AFC Champions League title later this month when the 2008 winners face fellow former champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the last eight of this season’s ACL.
The 2014 J.League treble winners travel to the Korea Republic for the first-leg of their quarter-final clash with the 2006 winners on August 26 before Gamba host the return fixture on September 16.
