Guangzhou: Greece international defender Avraam Papadopolous struck with two minutes of Guangzhou Evergrande’s Chinese Super League (CSL) Round 23 match to deny the 2015 AFC Champions League quarter-finalists all three points, with Saturday’s home tie against Shanghai Shenhua ending in a 2-2 draw.
Colombian midfielder Giovanni Moreno put the visitors 1-0 up with two minutes of the first half remaining before goals from Elkesson (57th) and the 2015 ACL’s leading scorer Ricardo Goulart (77th) looked to have secured a come-from-behind win for the reigning CSL champions.
However, with the full time whistle at the Tianhe Stadium just a couple of minutes away right-winger Lu Zheng set up Papadopolous for the equaliser as Guangzhou Evergrande had to settle for their ninth draw of the domestic campaign.
Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side maintained pole position at the top of the CSL standings but the dropped points could help Shenhua’s neighbours Shanghai SIPG leapfrog the 2013 AFC Champions League winners at the summit if Sven Goran-Eriksson’s side can defeat Hangzhou Greentown at home in their CSL Round 23 clash on Sunday.
Guangzhou will take on Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol in the first leg of their AFC Champions League quarter-final at Kashiwa Stadium on August 25. The 2013 ACL champions will then host Kashiwa in the return fixture at the Tianhe Stadium on September 15.
