A pair of clubs looking for points for different reasons in the Western Conference meet when Sporting Kansas City play host to the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday evening at Sporting Park. Following their dramatic come-from-behind home win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at the weekend, Sporting find themselves just three points out of the top spot in the conference with games in hand over all their closest rivals. After their 1-0 win against the Colorado Rapids to snap a six-game winless run, the Quakes sit six points out of sixth place in the West and the final playoff position.
- Sporting Kansas City became the second team in MLS history to overcome a two-goal lead after the 80th minute, scoring three goals in the final 10-plus minutes to snatch a 4-3 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday evening at Sporting Park, their second consecutive win. Sporting are the final team in MLS undefeated at home this season (8-0-4).
- The Earthquakes put an end to their six-game winless skid, victorious for the first time since June 27 as Clarence Goodson scored the game’s only goal in a victory against the Colorado Rapids on Friday evening at Avaya Stadium.
- The last time a road team won in the series came all the way back in 2004, when San Jose won at Arrowhead Stadium. Last year, Sporting won 1-0 on March 22 at Sporting Park.
- Sporting have an eight-game home winning streak alive vs. the Quakes. Kansas City has not won in San Jose since Aug. 16, 2000. The Quakes have won nine of the 14 meetings since in northern California, with five draws.
