Goal reviews Kelantan vs Perak in the latest fixture of the Malaysian Super League that has just made a return after the Raya break.

Perak lost ground on fellow title challengers Pahang and Johor Darul Ta’zim as lost away in Kota Bahru to Kelantan. With the top 2 winning their respective away matches, The Bos Gaurus were consigned to a slender 1-nil defeat to The Red Warriors in a feisty match that saw Mohd Nor Farhan sent off. Goal looks at the tactical musings from the match.

PICKING ON THE WEAK

M. Karathu fielded inexperienced Amirul Azhan at left back and it was an area targeted by his opposite number, Zahasmi Ismail. Nor Farhan was the designated wide attacker but he often swapped position with Gilmar da Silva in the first half as both players took turns to wreak havoc on Amirul. Numerous chances were created from their exploits down that flank, including the one that saw Erwin Carrillo crashing a shot onto the bar. Kelantan profited from that side when Amirul clashed with the on-rushing keeper Zamir Selamat that allowed Wan Zack Haikal to score the only goal of the match.

PLENTY OF WALL BUT LITTLE CREATIVITY

It was a game of two halves, in which Kelantan controlled the first but Perak came into the game in the second period. However, what is apparent is that there’s a distinct lack of creativity from the away team. Balls were pumped long from the likes of Idris Ahmad and Thiago Aquino to Woong Namkung and Horace James. To their credit, both Namkung and James won a lot of headers but were often too far apart to continue to build the attack. It was improved in the second half when more passes went behind Kelantan’s defence line for speedy Ridzuan Azly to run onto but the home defence hung on till the end.

Terengganu wallop ATM

Pahang and Johor Darul Ta’zim widen the gap at the top as Perak stumble in Kota Bharu.

The Red Warriors earned their third win in four games after edging high-flying Perak 1-0 at home, despite the late dismissal of Nor Farhan Muhammad for picking up two yellow cards. Perak started without influential skipper Nasir Basharuddin, and faced an early scare when Kelantan’s Colombian striker Erwin Carillo had a shot bounce back off the post in the 20th minute. Winger Wan Zack Haikal eventually broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute for his second goal in as many matches. Kelantan remain in ninth spot but stretch the gap between 10th-placed Sarawak to eight points. Meanwhile, Perak are left to rue their second consecutive defeat, but they remain in third spot.
At the Shah Alam Stadium, Selangor and PDRM played out a 1-1 draw that did neither side any favours. The Cops drew first blood through an Ali Ashfaq header in the 9th minute that bested Selangor goalkeeper Syamim Othman, and the Red Giants were forced into a half-time substitution as Australian defender Robert Cornthwaite was replaced by Rizal Fahmi Rosid after suffering an injury. Afiq Azmi, another substitute, saw his header rebound off the bar just after the hour mark, but Andik Vermansyah earned his side a share of the spoils with a dramatic direct free-kick with a minute left to play.
Champions JDT return from Sarawak with all three points thanks to a 2-0 away win courtesy of goals from Amri Yahyah and Luciano Figueroa. The Southern Tigers had to make do without suspended midfielder Safiq Rahim, and saw the first half end 0-0 despite having the majority of the chances. Veteran forward Amri finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute with his second goal in two games, while Argentine Figueroa made the points safe with a strike two minutes into additional time, his seventh league goal so far.
Pahang remain two points ahead of JDT at the Super League summit thanks to a come-from-behind win over basement dwellers Sime Darby. The Giant Killers lived up to that nickname with two early goals by Marko Perovic that gave them the belief that they might earn their first league win of the season. However, Jamaican centre-back Damion Stewart pulled one back on the half-hour mark via a header from Hafiz Kamal’s free-kick. Matias Conti then converted another cross from Hafiz (this time from a corner) to draw both teams level in the 58th minute. He gave them the lead barely ten minutes later with a header from Dickson Nwakaeme’s cross, and substitute Fauzi  Roslan made the points safe in the 74th minute with his first goal of the season. Pahang won 4-2.
Finally, Issey Nakajima-Farran made a dream return to action with a hat-trick, as Terengganu demolishedATM 5-1 away from home. Ismail Faruqi got the ball rolling with a header from Sharin Sapien’s cross in the 17th minute, but ATM responded six minutes later via an Abdulafees Abdulsalam free-kick that curled in from just outside the box. Both teams trooped in at half-time tied with a goal apiece, but Gustavo Lopez gave Terengganu the lead again with a direct free-kick of his own five minutes after half-time. Nakajima-Farran entered the fray not long after, and he scored his first goal of the night in the 56th minute after tapping in Norshahrul Idlan Talaha’s dink from the left. He completed his hat-trick by combining with fellow substitute Fakhrurazi Musa in the 73rd and 80th minute, tapping home crosses by the youngster after outrunning Obinna Nwaneri. The Turtles leapfrog PDRM into 7th place, while ATM continue to be four points adrift of safety.
