USA draws nemesis Canada in Olympic men's qualifying

   

The USA and Canada will meet again in Olympic men's qualifying. Four years ago, Canada's 2-0 win over the USA in Nashville ultimately cost the USA a berth in the semifinals  and knocked it out of contention.

They will face off in Group A of the Concacaf qualifying tournament that will be held Oct. 1-13. Also in the USA's group: Panama and Cuba.

The USA opens with a pair of games at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas, against Canada on Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. CT and Cuba on Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. CT. The U.S. will conclude group play at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, on Oct. 6 against Panama at 7:30 p.m. MT.

Mexico play will Honduras, Haiti and the winner of the Costa Rica-Guatemala playoff in Group B, which begins at StubHub Center in Carson, California, with doubleheaders on Oct. 2 and 4.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals, where the two winners will qualify for the 2016 Olympics hosted by Rio de Janeiro. The winner of the third-place will face Colombia in a playoff. The semifinals on Oct. 10 and final on Oct. 13 will be played at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.

Teams must use under-23 players in qualifying. They are allowed to take three over-age players to the Olympics.
