Doha: The AFC Champions League is on the rise and steadily closing the gap on its European counterpart Lehhwiya winger Vladimir Weiss has stated in an interview with FIFA.com.
“I think it [the AFC Champions League] is picking up and edging closer to the European version,” the 25-year-old Slovakia international said.
“It’s progressing every year and I know myself that the ACL is very tough. I think it’s more known around the world which is a very important thing.”
Weiss shone in the international spotlight with a superb match-winner against Bunyodkor in the group stage of this year’s ACL as the Lekhwiya progressed to the Round of 16, where they defeated Qatar Stars League rivals Al Sadd 4-3 over two legs to set up a mouthwatering quarter-final showdown with Saudi Arabia giants Al Hilal.
However, Weiss picked up an injury during Lehkwiya’s pre-season training camp in Turkey and question marks over whether or not he will add to the 15 appearances he has made over two editions of Asia’s premier club tournament when the the four-time Qatar champions travel to Riyadh for the first leg of their quarter-final clash against last year’s runner-up on.
But whether he plays or not, the former Rangers, Espanyol, and Olympiacos player is all too aware of the significance AFC Champions League glory will bring to Lekhwiya.
“Now in the quarter-finals, I think the big focus is to go as far as we can and hopefully reach the final.”
Lekhwiya will travel to Saudi Arabia to play Al Hilal in the first leg of the AFC Champions League quarter-finals on August 25 before hosting the return fixture on September 15.
