ON THIS DAY: 11 September

Today we look back on the club’s second home match of their first Hyundai A-League campaign when, on a sunny Sunday afternoon Newcastle Jets welcomed the highly fancied Sydney FC to the Hunter.
Then nicknamed “Bling FC” because of the tag as the glamour club of the league - which was underpinned by the marquee recruitment of ex-Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke - Sydney FC boasted a number of ex-Socceroos and former Newcastle United players.
The starting line-ups were:

The Jets made two changes following the 1-1 draw with the Mariners the week before, introducing Labinot Haliti and Paul Kohler for Craig Deans and Mark Bridge, while marquee signing Yorke found himself on the Sydney bench.

Jets striker Ante Milicic was played through on goal by a deft Nick Carle pass and managed to beat the oncoming Clint Bolton and score in the sixth minute at the Gonninan end of the ground. It was his second goal in as many matches, both provided by Nick Carle in a partnership that would continue as the season progressed.
In the 18th minute Milicic turned provider for former Premier League player, and Novocastrian, Richard Johnson to score and give the Jets a 2-0 lead.
The Jets continued to pressure the Sky Blues but couldn’t extend their lead, and former Newcastle United captain Matt Bingley was substituted by the visitors before half time.
Half time saw the introduction of Yorke for Robbie Middleby which resulted in the dominance of play start to shift back towards Sydney.

In the 70th minute, Terry McFlynn was shown a straight red following a dangerous tackle and the ensuing coming together saw fiery Jets left back, Mateo Corbo receive a red for a second bookable offence. Both teams were down to 10 men.

Sydney FC managed to pull a goal back in the 78th minute through Yorke to make it 2-1 but it wasn’t enough as the Jets held on for the final few minutes to claim their first victory of the new competition in front of 9,127 fans at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Aussie football at war: strike action could consume A-League if pay resolution not found

AN ugly situation could get even worse with the players union refusing to rule out the possibility of an A-League strike if no resolution is reached with Football Federation Australia.
After the Socceroos withdrew from commercial activities in Perth ahead of their World Cup qualifier and the Matildas made good on their threat to boycott a two-match tour of the USA, a disruption to the A-League season is on the cards.
Such drastic action would be severely damaging to the competition, which enters just its 11th season next month, but PFA boss Adam Vivian says the players are holding out for the right deal.
Meet the marquees: Who’s our next Berisha?
“We’ll obviously work in consultation with the players in that process, but as it currently stands we certainly wouldn’t take that (a strike) off the table,” Vivian said.
“We’ve had to take some fairly drastic measures to be heard on this and I think it would be incredibly unfortunate if we got that level, but certainly from our perspective the A-League players are not taking anything off the table as it currently stands until they get the right deal.”
After seven months of negotiating, the PFA and FFA are still no closer to agreeing on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, with talks set to continue on September 21.
The Matildas took unprecedented action by withdrawing from international games after their demands for a wage increase from $21,000 to $34,000 weren’t met, but Vivian denied reports that the national women’s team are being used as a “bargaining chip” to force FFA’s hand.
“The Matildas program in its current format is grossly underfunded and they are paid only part-time remuneration for a full-time workload, especially in the lead up to the World Cup,” he said.
“Being able to take in the revenues from the other two forms of the game, in the Socceroos and A-League, means that the Matildas correction is affordable under a Whole of Football model, that’s why it was important.”
Meanwhile, there was at least some good news for the Western Sydney Wanderers, who unveiled plans to develop a high-quality training and administration centre at Blacktown International Sportspark, which will include eight new fields and a specialist half training football field.
“I am delighted that we have the opportunity to set down permanent roots in Blacktown and create a base that will be an incredible asset to Western Sydney,” said Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer.
“Along with the announcement last week of our new stadium in Parramatta this is a very exciting time for the Wanderers and for the future of football in our region.”

Wanderers secure A-League future at Blacktown

Western Sydney Wanderers have today announced a partnership with Blacktown City Council to make Blacktown International Sportspark the Club’s long-term training and administration home.
The Wanderers have been working closely with the Council, Western Sydney Parklands Trust and Blacktown District Soccer Football Association to develop a football facility of regional, national and international importance with all facilities to be planned and designed to complement the magnificent setting that is Western Sydney Parklands.
Western Sydney Wanderers, Blacktown District Soccer Football Association, Western Sydney Parklands Trust and Council will continue to work collaboratively to finalise staging plans and approvals. Further details will be revealed over the next few months but it is planned to include a high quality Wanderers Training & Administration Centre, up to eight new football fields, a specialist half-training field and associated infrastructure, parking and landscaping.

Wanderers Chairman Paul Lederer said this development is the result of a lot of hard work from all parties which will deliver a prized asset for Western Sydney and result in an exciting future for the Wanderers.

“I am delighted that we have the opportunity to set down permanent roots in Blacktown and create a base that will be an incredible asset to Western Sydney,” said Lederer.

“Along with the announcement last week of our new stadium in Parramatta this is a very exciting time for the Wanderers and for the future of football in our region.

“We have the tools and the support to make a significant impact in the Australian sporting landscape and we plan to take this opportunity with both hands to deliver exceptional outcomes to our fans, members and our community – mark my words, this is a game changer.”

Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said that the announcement would not only drive football in the region but will maximise the Wanderers elite pathway creating the next generation of stars of the game.

“I echo the Chairman’s comments, this is a very exciting phase in our development,” said Tsatsimas.
“Our academy structure will be the backbone of the Club’s future and securing our headquarters in Blacktown allows us to be a central point in the growth of the region and the growth of football in this country.

“We thank the Mayor, Council and people of Blacktown for making this our home and look forward to creating a long and successful future here.”

Looking to the future, a High Performance Centre overlooking the existing synthetic field is planned that will provide aquatics recovery, an indoor hall, cutting edge sports science, analysis rooms, gym and hospitality facilities for all Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney stakeholders and the community.
