Harry Redknapp explains his critical comments about Liverpool

   

Former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United manager Harry Redknapp has explained his comments about Liverpool last week on Kicca.com.

Last week, former Tottenham boss Redknapp said at the Telegraph Total Football Live event: “ I don't fancy Liverpool at alI.

“I think it's the worst Liverpool team I have seen in years. They look bang average. They are lucky to have any points.”

Redknapp, who managed Queens Park Rangers and West Ham along with Tottenham in his career, has explained his critical comments about Liverpool.

“It wasn’t meant as a dig as I am a big fan of both the club and Brendan Rodgers,” the Englishman wrote on Kicca.com. “If I could have a season ticket at one club it would be at Anfield. I love the atmosphere there and the football the Reds play. I was simply giving an honest answer to a simple question.

“Two years ago I thought they deserved to win the league, they were that good. But since then they’ve lost their four best players.

"Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard have moved on and Daniel Sturridge has been injured. I cannot think of any club or manager who could cope with that.

“It’s not Brendan’s fault he’s lost the backbone of that great side he had 18 months ago, I feel for him.”

Redknapp seems to be over the top in his praise for Liverpool, but he does have a point about manager Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers almost led the Reds to the Premier League title in the 2013-14 season, and it must be hard for him to cope with the departures of Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling.

However, Liverpool do have a team that can at least challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

One suspects that this season will be crucial for Rodgers. The 42-year-old needs to take Liverpool back into the Champions League, or he could come under huge pressure at the end of the campaign.
