The New York Red Bulls took over the lead in the Eastern Conference on goal difference over D.C. United, while FC Dallas closed to within one point of the lead in the Western Conference. Just three points separate the top five teams on points in the Supporters' Shield race, while FC Dallas and the Red Bulls are 1-2 in terms of points-per-game. San Jose didn't help its chances of making the playoffs when it had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Seattle, while the playoff hopes of Houston and Colorado faded.
