Reds put three past City in pre-season friendly
With perfect conditions greeting the two sides at the City Football Academy in Melbourne, both sides utilised the match in preparation for their respective Westfield FFA Cup Quarter Finals.
The Reds almost got off to the perfect start after a long ball from Carrusca broke the offside trap, setting Craig Goodwin off one-on-one with new City goalkeeper, Thomas Sorensen, but Goodwin’s effort was beaten away by the former English Premier League ‘keeper.
City had a chance to get an early goal in the 14th minute when Aaron Mooy found Stefan Mauk in-behind the United defence, but Mauk’s heavy touch let him down and the chance was squandered.
This was an opportunity the Victorian-based side would end up regretting, as moments later, Jeggo made it 1-0 for the Reds. An attempted City clearance found Dylan McGowan who headed the ball down for Marcelo Carrusca, whose neat flick for Jeggo sent our No. 18 through to slot the ball home.
Five minutes later, Carrusca bagged a goal for himself when his brilliant free-kick on the edge of the box deflected off the crossbar and into the back of the net, leaving Sorensen completely helpless.
City worked their way back into the match, having a chance from Erik Paartalu cleared off the line, however scores remained the same going into the break.
The match’s quick tempo continued into the opening stages of the second half, with United increasing their lead to three goals just before the hour mark.
A defence-splitting through ball from Isaías fed Sergio Cirio one-on-one with Sorensen, the Spaniard opening his body and beating City’s new No. 1 with ease.
The hosts managed to get a consolation goal back through Wade Dekker, but it was too little, too late for City, as the Reds’ secured the win.

Filip Holosko goal video: New international marquee gets off the mark for Sydney FC
JUST days after fellow foreign signing Milos Ninkovic scored a stunning goal, new Sydney FC marquee Filip Holosko has opened his account in similarly spectacular fashion in a 4-0 rout of NPL NSW side South Coast Wolves.
In one of Sydney FC’s final pre-season friendlies to prepare for the start of the new A-League season, Holosko came off the bench to wrap up the win by driving his shot beyond Wolves’ goalkeeper from 25 metres out.

The Slovakian international, who has been capped 65 times by his country, told foxsports.com.au he was enjoying being Down Under.
“I’m enjoy Sydney a lot,” he said. “I came one month ago and then we went into a pre-season camp on the Gold Coast, which was good to train like this but it was also very hard for me after two months holiday.”
Last week, Serbian international Ninkovic had scored a quality volley in a training game, controlling the ball with his chest on the edge of the box from a corner routine before his unstoppable shot dipped beyond the opposition’s goalkeeper.
The A-League kicks off on Thursday 8 October as Western Sydney Wanderers host Brisbane Roar. Sydney FC’s first game is at home to Melbourne City on Saturday 10 October.
Sydney FC fans weigh into FFA pay dispute by raising money for W-League players

The bitter pay dispute that has split Australian professional football has prompted the intervention of A-League supporters who are having their say on the matter, and putting their money where their mouth is.
Fans of Sydney FC reacted to the news of the Matildas' withdrawal from a two-game friendly tour of the US last week with frustration over the state of pay for female footballers. Through a supporter group website, the fans created an online donation to help fund the club's W-League team with the initial goal raising enough money to sponsor a player for the season.
What they didn't expect was to achieve that within a matter of days.
"The Matildas have been in the news quite a bit about the pay dispute and not being funded. We thought about it and thought that we can't support the Matildas by funding money but we can definitely support our own Sky Blue girls," spokesman Steve Southworth said.
The supporter group, The Cove, have raised more than $5500 since Saturday and are on track to sponsor two of the club's players this season. Within just four hours of their donations going live, more than $1600 was raised by fans with one person donating $250 to sponsor a W-League player. In total, 86 individual payments were made to the cause listed on the supporter group website.

The costs for corporate sponsorships of players is usually $4400 but the club agreed to reduce it to $3300 for the supporter group, who will not receive any of the associated benefits such as match tickets.
The names of two players to receive the sponsorship will be selected at random with both to receive 25 per cent of the sponsorship fee, or about $825. The remainder will go towards funding the W-League team.
"We're also having a barbecue with those players now. We've asked for a minimum of $45 and so far nobody has put anything less in there," Southworth said.
The group is hoping to raise as much money as possible for the players that could lead to an annual scholarship funding by the supporters for one player per season.
"It's a great initiative The Cove are undertaking to sponsor two of our Westfield W-League players," Sydney FC chief executive Tony Pignata said.
"Hopefully it will help increase interest and raise the profile of the Sydney FC W-League team and encourage more of our fans to come out and back our girls each week."
