Cristiano Ronaldo made it eight goals for the week by scoring a second-half hat-trick as Real Madridthrashed 10-man Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0 in their opening Champions League Group A match at the Bernabeu.
Rafael Benitez's side went on the front foot from the off and should have made the most of half-chances forIsco and Raphael Varane from Toni Kroos's corners, before Andriy Pyatov saved well to deny Gareth Baleafter the Welshman had flicked Dani Carvajal's driven cross towards goal.
Karim Benzema wasted a glorious opportunity when he could only fire over after rounding Pyatov but he was gifted an opener shortly afterwards when the goalkeeper fumbled Isco's cross and the Frenchman was on hand to tap home.

Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo came close as Los Blancos kept up the pressure until the half-time whistle, and Shakhtar's hopes of getting back into the game after the break were soon dashed when Taras Stepanenko was shown a second yellow card for cynically bringing down Sergio Ramos as the defender tried to launch a counter-attack.
It got worse for the visitors also immediately when Darijo Srna was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area and Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to dispatch the penalty.
Shakhtar could have gone against the script had Oleksandr Hladkyy have hit the target with his header fromTaison's superb cross, but instead it was 3-0 shortly after the hour when Ronaldo converted from the spot for a second time after another dubious handball call.

Benzema continued to threaten Pyatov's goal as Real saw a chance to build early goal difference, curling wide of the mark before heading over the bar from a dangerous position after he was found by Isco's cross.
Not content with his five goals in his side's 6-0 win at Espanyol at the weekend, Ronaldo completed a second hat-trick in the space of four days after Pyatov could only parry Marcelo's shot to wrap up the win.
Cristiano Ronaldo moved three clear of Lionel Messi at the top of the Champions League scoring charts after a hat-trick against Shakhtar Donetsk.
A mistake let Karim Benzema tap-in for Real in their group stage opener before Shakhtar had Taras Stepanenko sent off.
Ronaldo scored a penalty after Darijo Srna was controversially punished for handball and added another spot-kick when Marcio Azevedo handled.
Ronaldo's third was a header which took him to 80 Champions League goals.
Real Madrid's main cause for concern from the game was forward Gareth Bale having to go off injured after 32 minutes.
The Wales international was holding his calf before being replaced by Mateo Kovacic, while the Spanish club's centre-backs Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos were also substituted with knocks.
Rampant Ronaldo
Ronaldo was level with Barcelona rival Messi on 77 Champions League goals before Real Madrid began their quest for a record 11th crown in Europe's top competition.
But after the Portuguese had bagged five goals against Espanyol on Saturday, he scored his third Champions League hat-trick to move clear on his own at the top.
Ronaldo and Messi have constantly overtaken each other for the honour of the competition's most prolific scorer and the latter will have the chance to respond when Barcelona meet Roma on Wednesday.
The first of Ronaldo's goals came after Srna was adjudged to have handled the ball, despite a shot from the Real forward appearing to hit him on the back.
"I feel so proud and happy to score eight goals in two games but that is not my goal - my aim is to be good all season and for the team to succeed, which is the most important for me, and win trophies," said Ronaldo.
"It is just the beginning of the season. The league is long. It is too early to say we are amazing or bad. Let's work the same way and let's see what happens at the end of the season."
Manager reaction
"Without playing a brilliant match we still created a lot of chances," said Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez.
"Bale had a spasm in his calf muscle. We must wait a day or two to see how serious it is. He had a similar issue last year."
