Sevilla have beaten Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 in their opening game of this season's Champions League Group D.
The La Liga side came close to taking the lead after just five minutes when winger Vitolo hit the Monchengladbach post after receiving the ball from Jose Antonio Reyes.
Roel Brouwers had an opportunity to put the visitors in front just one minute later, but didn't connect well enough with Ibrahima Traore's cross and watched his header pass wide of the post.
Traore himself then had a chance to shine after a lay-off from Raffael, but his shot was also wide of the mark with 15 minutes gone.
Looking for his second goal of the season, Sevilla striker Kevin Gameiro had two chances after 30 minutes, but a diving header found the side netting while a volley close to goal was blazed over.
Into the second half, and it was Gameiro who gave the home side the lead after two minutes of play with a penalty after Monchengladbach keeper Yann Sommer brought Vitolo down in the box.
Sevilla had a second penalty awarded two minutes later after Vitolo was brought down for a second time in the box, but Gameiro could only see his shot rattle off the crossbar.
Raffael had a half-chance to get Monchengladbach back in the game, but Sevilla continued to threat through Ever Banega and Jose Antonio Reyes before Gameiro was taken down in the box to give Sevilla a third penalty of the evening.
Rather than Gameiro, however, it was Banega who stepped up to the spot and buried the ball into the back of the net to give his side a second goal.
Sevilla finished the game off with less than 10 minutes remaining when substitute Yevhen Konoplyanka caught Sommer out at his near post, when what appeared to be a cross ended up in the back of the net from an acute angle to give the La Liga side a 3-0 win.

Sevilla 3-0 Borussia Monchengladbach: Visitors routed in

second-half show

The home side put their troubled domestic start to the season behind them with a rousing performance against the Germans after the break
Sevilla stepped up to the Champions League stage with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday evening.

There were questions lingering around the home side following a poor domestic start but penalties from Kevin Gameiro and Ever Banega and a first Sevilla goal from Yevhen Konoplyanka completed a 3-0 demolition job of their Group D opponents for Unai Emery's men.
Sevilla's successful defence of their Europa League crown last season booked their place in the Champions League and, while they were wasteful at times on Tuesday, Monchengladbach had no answer to the Liga side’s pace and movement in the final third.
Spurred on by their attacking full-backs, Sevilla rarely gave their visitors a moment’s rest and should have gone ahead early on when Jose Antonio Reyes blazed over from close range.
Although dominant, Sevilla's finishing was letting them down, with Gameiro – enjoying a more central role after Carlos Bacca's close-season departure – wasting three fine opportunities.
The breakthrough did eventually come via the France international, who converted a 47th-minute penalty, but he then hit a second onto the crossbar shortly after. Luck did not desert Sevilla 24 minutes from time, though, as Banega coolly swept home the game’s third spot-kick and Konoplyanka added a third late on to complete a convincing win.
Monchengladbach coach Lucien Favre spiced things up pre-match by blasting Sevilla's perceived play-acting when the two sides met in the Europa League last term and, perhaps as a result of those words, the Spaniards looked fired up right from the start and should have scored inside four minutes.
Vitolo struck the post from 18 yards and Reyes inexplicably sliced over the open goal from eight yards.
