Michael Turnbull Bachelorette: did goalkeeper stretch the truth about career in search of love?
IF you’re going to stretch the truth about your career achievements, best not do it on national television.
That’s what former Melbourne Victory back-up goalkeeper and now contestant on reality TV program The Bachelorette, Michael Turnbull, is finding out today.
Social media lit up on Wednesday night when Turnbull introduced himself on the show, by claiming: “the highlight of my career was playing for Australia and the Socceroos and also the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.”
The record books show that the 34-year-old’s only games for the green and gold came for the Under 20 and 23 teams and not the senior team, the Socceroos.
Turnbull was indeed in the squad for the Sydney Olympics, but his only playing time came in warm-up games against Queensland sides Gold Coast City and Rochdale Rovers.
He watched Australia’s three games (Honduras, Italy and Nigeria) from the bench, with Danny Milosevic preferred between the sticks.
Earlier this year, after signing as an injury replacement for Nathan Coe at Melbourne Victory, Turnbull attempted to clarify his career in Europe, and stints with Italian giants Roma and Belgian side Standard Liege.
“There are a lot of different things out there about where I have been and everyone seems to have their own take on it,” Turnbull told Football Queensland.
“I was at Marconi in the NSL, but in between there was a brief stint with AS Roma. It was effectively a loan deal but then I had to come back for the (NSL) Finals Series.”
“From there I went to Standard Liege, to Bristol City, to New Zealand Knights.”
“(At Roma) I played a lot of youth games, but no actual first team games. I was quite young then. But at Standard Liege I played a few games including in the cup.”
Turnbull also revealed to News Corporation he had turned down a lucrative move to the German Bundesliga in the hope of picking up an A-League contract.
“I got an offer from a Bundesliga club. At this stage I said to them I’m looking to stay in Australia and I don’t really want to go back to Europe,” he said.
“Everyone’s goal is to play in a top division in Europe and if I was younger it would have been a no-brainer — I would have jumped at the opportunity,” he said.
“But because I’m a little bit older now I always saw myself retiring and playing in Australia anyway, so hopefully I can pick up interest from the A-League.”
A-League’s Jets partner Alcatel Onetouch as sale talks continue
Australian soccer side Newcastle Jets have announced Alcatel Onetouch as their official mobile partner.
As part of the deal the company’s branding will feature on the back of the Jets’ away shirts throughout the 2015/16 A-League season.
Despite facing an uncertain future due to an impending change of ownership, the Jets have already signed the likes of Inspirations Paint, Linebreak, Greater Building Society, Beechwood Homes and Flight Centre as sponsors for the new season, which begins on 8th October.
The club’s interim chief executive David Eland said of the new tie-up: “It’s exciting for us to welcome a company with operations in over 160 countries around the globe on board, and this deal definitely demonstrates the continued and growing support that we’re receiving from the corporate sector.”
The new deal comes after Football Federation Australia (FFA) released a statement earlier this week confirming that the Jets will remain under the governing body’s control for the start of the new season.
The FFA has already reached what it calls a ‘broad agreement for the sale of the Jets to an international group’, but the transaction has had to be pushed back for undisclosed reasons.
“FFA and the international group have been through a comprehensive process of due diligence and negotiations,” said an FFA spokesperson.
“We have reached broad agreement on the sale, but the process won’t be finished by the time the Jets kick off against the Wellington Phoenix in round one.
“We’d expect the additional time required will be a matter of weeks, rather than months. We’re making this announcement today in the interests of giving players, coaches and staff some certainty for the season kick off.”
The Jets were put into administration in May when former owner Nathan Tinkler had his A-league licence revoked for failing to pay players and staff.

Great Hyundai A-League goals: Fab’s free-kick and kiss
Sit back and enjoy some fabulous Ferreira skill from last season when the Mariners hosted Melbourne City.
It was that good the Portuguese flyer even got a kiss from a woman in the stands as he went to celebrate with the fans.
Mariners supporters will be hoping we can see more of the same when the Hyundai A-League kicks off on October 8.

BLUFFER’S GUIDE
Can anybody stop the Bayswater City juggernaut?
Unbeaten in the Western Australia PS4 NPL season, Chris Coyne’s side did it again last Sunday to make it to the last four of the national NPL competition.
Trailing West Adelaide for much of the game, two goals in three second half minutes via David Heagney and Danny Dixon turned the result on its head.
Now back on their home turf City will see this as the perfect opportunity to make the national decider.
But what a great story Olympia FC are proving to be!
Expected to be swatted aside by South Melbourne last weekend, the plucky Tasmanians had other ideas, grinding out a 2-1 win.
The fact they did it with 10 men for most of the second half only added further weight to their stunning performance.
Gun midfielder Shae Hickey was the player who received that red card and is a huge loss for the visitors but they are drawing inspiration from the MetroStars of 2014 and believe they can go all the way by playing away.
You’d be foolish to write Glen McNeill’s troops off in what should be an utterly enthralling contest in the west.
Player to watch: David Heagney (Bayswater City)
Player to watch: Gavin Hoy (Olympia FC)
