With India’s continuing poor show at the international level, part of the blame has come on I-League clubs for their reluctance to release players in time for national duty. Former India football team skipper Bhaichung Bhutia stressed clubs needed to do so.
“It is in the interest of the clubs to release players for national preparatory camps. If the performance of national team improves it will invoke more interest in the game and players, which will bring in more fans and sponsors and help the game to grow,” Bhutia told this paper at the sidelines of the announcement of DHL’s official logistics and timing partnership with Indian Super League Two. DHL also announced the ‘DHL winning pass’ award per team for most assists during the tournament.
Bhutia asked fans to keep faith in the young team coached by Stephen Constantine. “Obviously the results aren’t what we want (in the AFC and World Cup 2018 qualifiers) but they put up a good fight against Iran in particular. It’s a team with a lot of youngsters after the retirement of 14-15 players, including myself. We have to give them time. There some good young players there,” he said.
The veteran striker, who was key to Constantine’s plans during his first tenure as India coach (2002-2005) and led to his return as AIFF technical committee head, came out in defence of the Englishman.
“Constantine has a new team. He needs more time with the players, “ he said.
Bhutia whose co-owned club Sikkim United is facing financial issues and running currently on a reduced scale, advised struggling clubs Pune FC and Bharat FC against shutting shop.
