Phillipe Coutinho’s brilliant winner lifted Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the top four and dented Manchester City’s title challenge
A word on Liverpool in a moment, but first let’s deal withManchester City, who followed up a fine first-half performance with a pathetic display after the break. For a team with so many talented players, they should be embarrassed by their lethargy in the second half. They are now five points behind Chelsea, they have played a game more and you do wonder how long Manuel Pellegrini has left in this job. Where was the desire? City strolled their way to this defeat. Mind you, they must be sick of the sight of Coutinho, who arguably topped his winner in this fixture last season with the goal that won this match. Jordan Henderson’s goal was pretty damn good too and Liverpool - who, lest we forget, played extra-time and penalties in Turkey on Thursday night - move up to fifth place, two points behind Manchester United. Thanks for reading. Bye.

Liverpool 2-1 Manchester City: Philippe Coutinho wins thriller at Anfield after Edin Dzeko cancelled out Jordan Henderson strike

  • Jordan Henderson curled home a Steven Gerrard-esque opener from 20 yards to put Liverpool in front
  • Edin Dzeko finished off a well-worked team move minutes later to haul the Premier League champions level
  • Philippe Coutinho scored the winner for the home side in the second half to continue their fine run of league form
  • Manchester City remain five points behind leaders Chelsea at the top of the league

Philippe Coutinho fired home a second-half winner as Liverpool continued their fine Premier League form.
Jordan Henderson had fired the Anfield side in front with a curled effort but Edin Dzeko levelled shortly after.
As a result, Liverpool close in on a top-four spot but City have a mountain to climb if they are to overhaul Chelsea.
