PRE-SEASON | Merrick looking forward to New Plymouth

Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick is looking forward to taking his team to New Plymouth for Sunday’s game against a New Zealand A side.
“It is always good to take the team to another part of the country and I am looking forward to taking on a New Zealand team again,” Merrick said.
“The Phoenix versus New Zealand A is becoming an annual event and it is beneficial to both camps.
“It gives myself and the national coach an opportunity to look at domestically based players and they can show us both what they are capable of.”
The Phoenix travel to New Plymouth on Friday morning and will train twice before Sunday’s game.
Travelling party: Lewis Italiano, Manny Muscat, Roly Bonevacia, Kwabena Appiah, Blake Powell, Albert Riera, Vince Lia, Ben Sigmund, Roy Krishna, Andrew Durante, Matthew Ridenton, Tamupiwa Dimairo, James McGarry, Sarpeet Singh, Oliver Sail, Ben Stroud.

A core of talented youngsters including Clayton Lewis, Moses Dyer, Joel Stevens and Logan Rogerson – part of the Men’s U-17 squad – get their latest opportunity in what has been busy few months on the international scene.

The contingent of 2015 U-20 and U-23 players will be joined by senior internationals Glen Moss and Michael McGlinchey as All Whites coach Anthony Hudson finalises his travelling party for the upcoming clash with Myanmar.

Hudson says the players brought together have a ready-made chance to push their case for inclusion for the September 8 international and beyond.

“Everyone involved are players in and around the All Whites so it’s a really good opportunity for us to look at a few players locally in this environment,” Hudson said.

“Players have got an opportunity to stake a claim, if not for the Myanmar trip, but the upcoming games as well. It’s a good opportunity for them.”

With the team assembling in New Plymouth on Friday, Hudson added that the time ahead of Sunday’s game will be just as important as the 90-minute hit out against a Phoenix side in their pre-season preparations for the coming A-League season.
“It’s an opportunity to spend a couple of days in the hotel, get to know the players a bit more and have some time together pre-September. To get contact time and time on the training pitch is really, really vital.”

New Plymouth District Council Manager Events and Venues Ron Murray said: “We’re excited to have these players appearing at Yarrow Stadium – it’s an amazing opportunity for our football fans to see talent of this calibre on our very own regional Stadium.
“Our local young players can be inspired by the likes of some these well-known football players, such as Manny Muscat, Roly Bonevacia, Ben Sigmund, Roy Krishna, Andrew Durante, Louis Fenton, Michael McGlinchey and Alex Rufer.”

The Junior Navy Blues finished eighth in last season's ASB Youth League but have previously won the title four times in 2007, 2009, 2013 and 2013.

"We're casting the net far and wide in our search for the next generation of Junior Navy Blues youth talent and will leave no stone unturned in our mission.

"This club has an outstanding track record at youth level and with the Auckland City FC U-17 tournament also growing bigger each year, we're raising the bar higher each time," Figueira said.

Napier City Rovers’ bid for a fifth ASB Chatham Cup crown faces another away test after the semi-final draw for the 2015 club competition was made on Tuesday.
Conducted by New Zealand football bloggers Jeremy Ruane and Enzo Giordani, the draw produced the fourth away trip in five cup ties this year for the Napier club as they will travel to first-time semi-finalists Birkenhead United over the weekend of August 29-30.

Napier, 12-time semi-finalists in the storied competition, booked their place via Saturday’s 3-0 win over former champions Western Suburbs of Wellington as they continue to chase a league and national cup double after clinching the Central League title earlier this month.
Birkenhead secured their first semi-final appearance with their own 3-0 win over a former champion – knocking out five-time winners Central United FC on Sunday.
The second semi-final is an all-Auckland affair which pits five-time ASB Chatham Cup winners Eastern Suburbs AFC – current leaders of the Northern Premier League – against Division 1 side Mangere United; also first-time semi-finalists.
-------------------------xxxx------------------------------------

Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs ended the three-peat ASB Chatham Cup title bid of Christchurch club Cashmere Technical on Sunday as three former winners also fell at the quarter-final stage.
The Northern Premier League leaders edged the Mainland Premier League frontrunners 2-1 at Garrick Memorial Park as Nathaniel Bowen opened the scoring for Suburbs just after the half hour mark.
Former All Whites midfielder Aaron Clapham hauled the hosts level with a trademark freekick in the 57th minute and just as it seemed extra time would be needed to separate the sides, Tristan Prattley netted from a freekick to the visitors to bring Cashmere’s 18-match ASB Chatham Cup winning run to an end.

The hosts also had Julyan Collett sent off in stoppage time for a second caution.
In Sunday’s early kickoff at the Caledonian Ground in Dunedin, Northern League Division 1 side Mangere United ousted 1999 competition winners Dunedin Technical with a 2-1 extra time win.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the visitors went ahead six minutes into the extra frame via Rinal Prasad only for Josh Stewart to level for Dunedin Technical two minutes later.
But Shaneel Sharma restored Mangere’s lead a minute before the break in the extra period and his goal turned out to be the winner as the only remaining club from outside one of the country’s top divisions sealed a place in the last four.
The home side played the second half of extra time with 10 men as Ross Howard was sent off for a second caution just before Sharma’s winner.

In the only all-Auckland match-up, Birkenhead United sent five-times winners Central United out of the competition with a 3-0 victory at Shepherds Park.
First half goals from Dan Morgan and Chad Coombes provided the buffer for the hosts and Godwin Darkwa’s late second half goal made things safe for Paul Hobson’s side.
On Saturday, four-time ASB Chatham Cup champions Napier City Rovers reached the semi-finals of the 2015 competition with a 3-0 victory over Wellington’s Western Suburbs at Endeavour Park.
In the meeting of the top two sides in the Central League, it was the recently crowned champions who again came out on top as first half goals to Angus Kilkolly and Ryan Tinsley gave the visitors a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Stephen Hoyle’s late goal increased the final margin to 3-0 as Bill Robertson’s side kept their league and cup double hopes alive at the expense of the 2006 cup winners.
The draw for the semi-finals of the 2015 ASB Chatham Cup will take place on Tuesday 11 August at 10am via Twitter @ASBChathamCup

Hassett relishing new challenge

Football Ferns midfielder Betsy Hassett is enjoying the latest chapter of her globe-trotting football career – signing recently for Norwegian club Amazon Grimstad.

After the Ferns’ FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign, Hassett travelled to Europe where transfer windows were closing for a number of different leagues.
The 81-cap international opted for the Norwegian club – in a stint that will last until the end of the Toppserien league season in November.

“I was then in contact with Amazon Grimstad and I thought it would be an interesting experience to come and play in Norway for the rest of the season with Kiwi coach Olli Harder,” Hassett said.
The 25-year old says the move is a great fit for her both on and off the field of play.
“This club really appealed to me as it is situated in a tiny beautiful town in the south of Norway right next to the ocean.

“I felt this was the perfect place to come and really focus on my football for the remainder of the season here with as little distraction as possible.

“The league here is very quick and physical and quite direct which is something I have not experienced before. I definitely bring different qualities to the style of play here and I am excited to learn from this style of play and add it to my game.”

Hassett says part of the appeal of the switch was to try to help the club move away from the threat of relegation from the top level of Norwegian women’s football.

“The team is near the bottom of the table in this league and so I have come here with a purpose which is to help the team stay in the league next year. This is a challenge that I am very much looking forward to achieving while I am here.”

“I love it so far. We won our first game against a top three team in the league so I was off to a good start. I am loving the team and the coaches and everyone has been very welcoming.”

Football Ferns coach Tony Readings says the move is good one for both Hassett as an individual and the national team.

“It’s important our players are getting regular competition at a high level as we continue to build-up towards qualification for the Olympics next year and beyond,” Readings said.

“Betsy has joined one of the top leagues in Europe and the experience she gets playing the Norwegian style of football will benefit her individually and the Football Ferns as we come up against nations who play in similar ways.”
