Dhaka: Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club overturned a first-half deficit to defeat Muktijoddah Sangsad 2-1 on Thursday to send the Bangladesh champions into the 2016 AFC Cup play-off qualifiers on a winning note.
Having already secured the 2015 Bangladesh Premier League with the previous round’s 3-2 victory over Dhaka Mohammedan, Sheikh Jamal opted to line up without five regular starters and the tactic appeared to count against the back-to-back champions, with Senegalese striker Camara Sabra putting Muktijoddah 1-0 up with ten minutes of the first half at the Bangabandhu National Stadium remaining.
Influential midfielder Mamunul Islam came on in the second half and made a telling contribution to Sheikh Jamal’s equaliser in the 61st minute, when the Bangladesh national team skipper’s volley was deflected into the net by Nigerian forward Emeka Darlington Onuoha before Gambian midfielder Landing Darboe sealed the win with one minute left on the clock, finishing clinically after being set up by Toklis Ahmed to seal the champions’ 15th win in 19 matches.
Sheikh Jamal head to Bishkek where they will take on five-time Kyrgyzstan champions FC Alga and Casa Benfica, back-to-back winners of Macau’s top division, for a place in the 2016 AFC Cup play-offs.
The Bangladesh champions begin their campaign on August 13 against Casa Benfica, two days after the East Asians and FC Alga kick-off Group B.
