James Kiffe links up with Adam Jahn for the lone goal in Sacramento Republic FC’s 1-0 victory over Real Monarchs in USL play at Bonney Field
Republic FC saw their first real scoring chance of the match go begging in the 7th minute whenCameron Iwasa laid a beautiful pass off for Danny Barrera inside the box. The Republic FC captain pirouetted to get the ball to his stronger left-foot and sent a shot on goal. Unfortunately Real Monarchs keeper Eduardo Fernandez was in position to make the save.
Republic FC had another opportunity just before halftime when defender Emrah Klimenta broke down the right side of the field. Klimenta crossed the ball into the box where Republic FC had found space but Barrera’s glancing header went just wide of the left post keeping the match scoreless into the break.
The home side did not waste anytime scoring in the second half as forward Adam Jahn tallied in the 47th minute. Iwasa was able to hold up the ball in the middle before sliding a pass out wide to defender James Kiffe on the left wing. Kiffe drove a low, one-touch cross into the box where Jahn slid in front of a defender and sent a shot past Fernandez for the 1-0 Republic FC lead.
Iwasa nearly added a second goal for Republic FC in the 60th minute when he sent a laser of a right-footed shot at the goal from just inside the 18-yard box. Iwasa beat the keeper but could not beat the cross bar as the shot bounced off the crossbar and back into play.
Real Monarchs had several chances to equalize but Republic FC keeper Dominik Jakubek was intent on keeping a clean sheet. Real Monarchs midfielder Omar Holness had a dangerous free kick in the 78th minute for Real Monarchs. Holness drove the 30-yard kick low and put it right on net. Jakubek read it all the way and blocked the initial shot before securing the rebound chance.
Republic FC was able to hold the shutout and secure the 3 points in the USL standings with the 1-0 home victory over Real Monarchs. This marks the first victory over Real Monarchs in the club’s history.
“I think the key for us was to remain patient”, said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle after the victory. “We created openings but we just weren’t able to find the net. I said to the boys at halftime that if we remained disciplined that chances would come. The whole squad was excellent and there is an energy about us now with a purpose and an understanding.”
Republic FC will take on the Monarchs again on Saturday, June 11 this time in Reno, Nev. Kickoff is 7:30 at Greater Nevada Field.
