Toyota Field – Josh Ford wanted to see his team play better defensively after San Antonio FC fell 0-1 to OKC last Saturday. Just three days later, he got he asked for as the club earned a point against their in-state rival.
Ford stopped all six shots he faced as San Antonio FC fought to a scoreless draw with the Rio Grande Valley Toros FC at Toyota Field on Wednesday night.
SAFC had solid chances in the first half, including one from Danny Garcia, but could not solve Toros goalkeeper Collie Brown.
“The guys fought hard,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “I’ve said before that in this league you have to earn points, and tonight the guys dug out a point. At the end of the day, we earned a good clean sheet and good, solid performances from several players.”
Ford tied a season-high with six saves, including four in the first half. It was the first clean sheet for SAFC since their opening night 3-0 victory in Seattle.
“The guys put in a lot of hard work today,” Ford said. “Things went our way on the defensive side, but unfortunately we weren’t able to find that turnaround to get the last goal at the end. I was happy to do my job and get the clean sheet with the guys in front of me.”
Up next: San Antonio FC will return to the pitch on Wednesday for Round 3 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against Des Moines Menace (PDL) in Iowa. The club owns a 2-4-4 (10 points) record and will return to USL play on June 4 against Rio Grande Valley on the road.
