Independence continue to struggle, lose to Bethlehem 1-0 |
Charlotte hasn't won in USL since May 7 |
The dog days have come early for the Charlotte Independence.
After a 1-0 loss to Bethlehem, Charlotte has not won a game since May 18 against the Charlotte Eagles in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Their last USL win was May 7 against FC Montreal, a stretch that includes two losses and three draws.
“We killed ourselves,” Independence coach Mike Jeffries said. “Two weeks in a row. Just brain dead plays in the beginning of the games and we have to chase the games. Pretty simple.”
Said defender Bilal Duckett, who went off early after a tackle from behind in the second half: “I have to take credit for a couple of mistakes at the back that have put us in bad spots. Obviously zeroing those out will help the group as a whole.”
Said midfielder Yann Ekra: “It’s been tough. Everyone worked hard, but we didn’t get the result at the end of the game. Sometimes, like this, that’s soccer.”
Since the poor start against Toronto (a 2-2 draw on June 4) Charlotte has struggled to start games well.
“Expect better,” Jeffries said. “I take responsibility for us not starting well, but whether it’s mentality organization, but for the last two games we’ve put ourselves in a hole and not really been able to dig ourselves out. We weren’t able to get it done today.”
Charlotte has lost twice at home, a place they expect to win. Now 5-4-3, Charlotte has one more game at home before a two-game road trip.
“It’s tough to lose a game at home, because you need to win at home,” defender Henry Kalungi said. “We have to focus, because this game is done. We need to focus as a team, because the coach sets out the proper instructions at the beginning of the game and tells us ‘this is how you have to play,’ but I feel we missed simple details that lead us to losing the game. We’re a family. We have to pick each other up and keep pushing forward so that we can gain our momentum back.”
Said Duckett: “We have to keep fighting for each other as a group. We’re still doing a lot of good things. We’re just missing the final pass a little bit, missing the final finish a little bit, but that comes with confidence. When it rains it pours a little bit—we just have to keep focusing on process, and forget about the results, forget about the standings a little bit. We know what we’re capable of.”
