Hungary are expected to have an easy ride when they open their World Cup qualification campaign with an away game at the tiny nation of Faroe Islands.

Hungary were surprise package at the European Championships in France and they squeezed past to the knockout rounds of the tournament winning a group that includes Portugal and Austria. They registered only one win in the tournament which came against Austria. Subsequent draws against Iceland and Portugal was enough for them to enter the round of 16, where they were undone by a brilliant Belgium.

The success of Hungary in recent times owes much to their unorthodox head-coach Bernd Storck. He lifted the steam from a difficult position during the qualification phase for Euro 2016 and guided them to the final tournament in a dramatic fashion. The summer tournament in France was Hungary’s first major tournament since the 1986 World Cup.

While Faroe Islands are the smallest UEFA member and they are currently ranked 135th in the FIFA rankings. They are yet to qualify for a major international tournament. They managed 5 wins from 60 World Cup qualifying matches since their first entry in 1994.
