John Caulfield's side failed to capitalise on one of their games in hand on Dundalk, failing to find the net at the Showgrounds
Cork City closed the gap on league leaders Dundalk, but only by one point as they were held scoreless by Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds.
The Bit o'Red had the best of the early chances, with Gavin Peers' close range header from a Kieran Sadlier corner looking destined for the back of the net before a crucial goal-line clearance from Karl Sheppard prevented the hosts from taking the lead.
Dave Robertson's men worked incredibly hard and continue to pile the pressure on the City defence. Tobi Adebayo-Rowling surged forward, nutmegged Kevin O'Connor before laying it off to Sadlier, whose cross was just too soon for the sliding Liam Martin.
Karl Sheppard tried to threaten the Sligo goal, but he could only send a long range effort wide, before an excellent cross from the former Shamrock Rovers man was headed right at Ciaran Nugent by Garry Buckley.
The in-form Sean Maguire, who was once on the books at Sligo Rovers, leaped on to a mistake from Gavin Peers, forcing Nugent into a save. That was as close as either side would come during the early exchanges.
The visitors looked far more threatening after the re-start and they thought they had taken the lead on 82 minutes when Dave Mulcahy had the ball in the back of the net, but the linesman's flag had been raised for offside.
That was as close as they would come, and they will now have to hope for results to go their way as they continue to chase Dundalk. City are now seven points behind with one game extra to play.
