Two years after leaving London for Paris, David Luiz has returned to Chelsea.
Chelsea and PSG have announced the deal - in the final hours of the summer transfer window - that brings David Luiz back to Stamford Bridge on a three-year contract.
David Luiz left Chelsea for Paris Saint-Germain in 2014 for a world record fee for a defender, £50million, but has made the remarkable return to London just two years after departing and signs a three-year deal with an option for a fourth year.
A much needed option
After countless attempts to sign a centre-half this summer, Chelsea set their sights on their former Brazilian defender and the reported fee is considerably less than the fee that they received for Luiz in 2014. The move will reportedly cost around £30m and while PSG did not want to sell, David Luiz pushed for the deal to happen.
With a shortage of centre-backs at Chelsea, David Luiz's arrival will be welcomed as not only depth but also an upgrade. Kurt Zouma has yet to return from his knee injury and with plenty of players loaned out, John Terry and Gary Cahill are the only first team options available for Antonio Conte.
Reunited
David Luiz has plenty of memories from his time at Chelsea and will be hoping to add a few more upon his return to West London. Chelsea's defensive issues have been obvious stemming back to last season and while David Luiz has been known to be erratic and make defensive mistakes, he brings experience and strengthen's Antonio Conte's defence.
Luiz made 143 appearances in his first stint with the Blues, scoring 12 times in the process. He was also a key member of Chelsea's 2012Champions League winning team, playing in the final through injuries and scoring his penalty in the shootout.
A fan favourite during his time in London, Luiz makes the switch back to Stamford Bridge much to the delight of the majority of the Chelsea faithful and should have an instant impact in the changing room and on the pitch.
David Luiz joins Marcos Alonso, the fullback from Fiorentina, as Chelsea's deadline day signings and becomes the fifth signing of the summer. N'Golo Kante, Michy Batshuayi, Eduardo, Marcos Alonso and David Luiz make for a successful summer for Antonio Conte.
