The Blues were beaten in Michigan after a woeful first half display but Hazard shone in the second half to make the score respectable
Antonio Conte suffered his second pre-season defeat as Chelsea manager with Real Madrid running out 3-2 victors in front of a record crowd at Big House, Michigan.
Marcelo inspired Los Merengues and opened the scoring after a mazy dribble that culminated when he was welcomed inside by weak Chelsea defending and his powerful right-footed strike deceived Asmir Begovic via a deflection.
Marcelo then pinched possession twice in quick succession; on the first occasion the 28-year-old drove into the area and finished at the near post, then 10 minutes later he squared for Mariano to drive home from 25 yards.
The 105,826 spectators were treated to a contest in the second half as Eden Hazard managed to get Chelsea ticking and the Belgian grabbed two late consolation goals, despite Zinedine Zidane's side always being assured of victory.
Here are five things we learned from the International Champions Cup match:
Aina given reality check
Ola Aina has been one of the surprise developments from Antonio Conte’s pre-season so far.
The England youth international has impressed at both right-back and left-back but experienced a torrid time when tasked with coping with one of the game’s elite attacking full-backs.
Marcelo was on a rampage and after smashing home the first with a deflection, he stole possession from the 19-year-old, penetrated the heart of the Blues’ defence and finished smartly at the near post.
The third also came down Aina’s side, proving there is considerable work to be done before he can be considered as a viable starting option for Conte.
Marcelo is the best attacking left-back in world football
In a Real Madrid side sprinkled with youth and squad players, Marcelo emerged and thrived with the added leadership responsibility.
Without Toni Kroos or Luka Modric, the Brazilian gladly accepted an increased amount of touches and obliged when the Blues offered him a route forward.
Marcelo’s buccaneering run from deep and a wonderfully disguised feint saw him cut inside and lash home the opener with his weaker right - aided by a deflection - as Oscar weakly stood off.
His instinct to step up and win possession in the final third is also to be applauded, culminating in his and Los Merengues’ second of the game to make Aina pay for his sloppy pass.
High on life after an early double, Marcelo could have been forgiven for being greedy and looking for his hat trick, but the awareness to slide the ball inside for the open Mariano - who thumped in the third - proved he is a team player too.
Mariano bursts on to the scene
With many of Real Madrid’s superstars still on vacation, Zinedine Zidane was forced into taking a closer look at some of the club’s academy.
Zizou will have been delighted when Mariano duly grasped the opportunity to show just what he can do.
One of La Fabrica’s outstanding performers in recent years having scored 30 goals in 40 appearances for the B team, Mariano is at the point of his career at 22 years of age where he needs to push on.
A lively display was capped when he lashed in Real Madrid’s third after clever movement to find space through the middle to reach Marcelo’s square ball.
Kante’s introduction can’t come soon enough
Antonio Conte has a huge job on his hands to fix the mess that Jose Mourinho left behind, but it will become a great deal easier once N’Golo Kante is fit enough to play.
The France international begun training with his new team this week but was not ready to feature at the Big House and Chelsea’s display showed just how crucial he could be this season.
While Aina’s individual errors simply have to be eradicated, the ease at which Marcelo was able to dart towards goal will concern Conte. Gary Cahill failed to anticipate the mistake early enough to come across and Nemanja Matic was treading water as Marcelo sped past him.
Kante’s instinct to close down the channels that open up through positional errors will save Chelsea a great deal in the infancy of Conte’s reign as the squad gradually learn the system.
Hazard starts road to redemption
Eden Hazard had a nightmare season last term and whatever the reason was, his quality is undeniable.
Glimpses of the PFA Player of the Season from the year before were evident towards the end of the campaign as the Belgian readied himself for the Euros and now the 25-year-old has returned after his vacation to redeem his damaged reputation.
The desire to show for the ball was there early on as he introduced himself to the Michigan crowd, though the quality took a while to come with a ballooned free-kick evidently frustrating him.
But his movement and perseverance paid off when he scampered towards goal to punish a poor Real Madrid offside trap and he nudged the ball around Ruben Yanez and converted into the empty net.
He repeated the trick in stoppage time to grab a brace with a near replica of his first to cap off a productive cameo.
If Conte is to inspire a return to the top four or a push for the title, Hazard back to his sparkling best will be essential and when compared to 12 months ago, Hazard has begun on the right path.
