Second-stage leaders Kawasaki Frontale narrowly beat Shonan Bellmare 3-2 on Saturday as Yoshito Okubo scored in the second half, extending their unbeaten J.League run this season to 15 games.
With the victory, Kawasaki maintained the lead in the stage of the first division, as second-placed Urawa Reds easily won against Ventforet Kofu 2-0 after former Southampton striker Tadanari Lee and midfielder Yuki Muto scored goals in the first half.
Frontale’s defender Shintaro Kurumaya opened the scoring in the first half, putting the ball past Bellmare goalkeeper Tomohiko Murayama.
Frontale widened the lead as the veteran 34-year-old Okubo received a precise pass from Kurumaya and netted the second goal.
Bellmare nipped at Frontale’s heels with two goals in the second half but their additional shots were barely blocked by Frontale’s firm defence.
The first-stage winner Antlers suffered a defeat against Sagan Tosu 0-1, slipping to ninth from eighth in the second stage.
Gamba Osaka, the 2005 and 2014 winners, beat defending champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima 1-0 as midfielder Hiroyuki Abe scored in the second half.
Yokohama F Marinos were held to a scoreless draw by Nagoya Grampus now facing fears of plunging to the second division as they extended a winless streak to 14 games.
