RFPL 2016/2017 – Who Has the Best Kit?

With the kick off to the 2016/2017 season, Russian clubs have all showed off their brand new kits. Some were nice, and some were downright ugly. In this article, we’ll guide you through them all, and let you vote about which ones you like and which you don’t like.
Tom Tomsk
The newly promoted Siberian side never hold an official presentation of their new kit, but they have already used them in a friendly game against Spartak Subotica. This light green shirt with black elements looks refreshing compared to the boring dark green kits we have seen them in so often in the past.

Arsenal Tula

We have missed Arsenal’s reckless style of play, their stadium atmosphere and, of course, the design of their home shirt, which, we assume, is inspired by cheese melted on the blood from our eyes.

FC Orenburg

RFPL debutants Orenburg’s home kit is just a blue shirt with three different logos (the coat of arms of Orenburg oblast, the Adidas logo, FC Orenburg crest). The away jersey, however, looks more interesting with a wide black and blue stripe on the chest.Orenburg

Anzhi Makhachkala

Just like Tom, Anzhi didn’t have an official presentation, but their youth team have already played in the new kits. Anzhi captured several players from Kuban Krasnodar, and with Kuban relegated, Anzhi can play in their yellow-green kits without being confused with the club from Krasnodar.

It is interesting that their home kit this season is green, like it was at the time of their first appearance at the highest level of Russian football.

FC Ufa

Ufa have been quiet this summer, and are yet to spend the millions received by selling Oleksandr Zinchenko to Manchester City. Perhaps that’s why they asked players from their womans team to present their new kit. All three jerseys are identical and have a barely visible print of cow parsnip on the front, which is the national symbol of the Bashkortostan region. The green kit is supposed to be used in Champions League games or in matches against red and white teams.

Amkar Perm

There was an official presentation of new kits, but nobody seemed to attend it, meaning we don’t have any pictures. An investigation on Amkar’s website showed that the team, who wear Joma shirts, prefer to train in Adidas, which is all you need to know about sponsorship deals in Russia.

Rubin Kazan

Rubin’s home kit (red) takes us back to the 90s with an old school look. The white away jersey consists of squares made of Tatarstan flags, while the third kit looks bold, but it would definitely look better with a darker green, like the one Tom used to use. Anyway, nice try.

Krylya Sovetov Samara

Nike found its most unattractive template for the team from Samara. It is hard to believe that fans like the crest being crossed by a needless line. The home kit (blue) looks a slightly better — at least it doesn’t remind us of a prison uniform like the white away one.

Ural Ekaterinburg

Ural had one of the worst kits last season with its crystal meth look, and this season the Bumblebees from Ekaterinburg went with a more classic look, but saved some chemistry for the goalkeeper jersey.

The away kit has to be one of the most boring kits in Russia, and it couldn’t be more plain. In fact, it doesn’t look like it has a design at all. Even amateur teams would be ashamed of it.

Hopefully we get to see the third kit more than the away kit. Black and orange is a strong combination, which makes Russian football more attractive, and the way it uses Ural’s traditional colours is a nice touch.

Terek Grozny

Although using a standard template, Adidas has created a shirt that fits Terek amazingly well. The pattern on the chest is a reference to the famous Caucasus mountains. This might be the best kit in the club’s history, and perhaps they can finally be known for something else than Ramzan Kadyrov’s various whims. The away one, however, is slightly boring.

Lokomotiv Moscow

The Railwaymen managed to surprise their fans by introducing the club’s first ever green home kit. It becomes even more revolutionary by the fact that Lokomotiv have only used green shirts three times in their history: in 2004, in 2007 and in 2015/2016.

Lokomotiv will also issue a special retro kit to commemorate the 80-year anniversary of the club’s first victory in the Soviet Cup. Back then, the Railroaders played in red with a white vertical stripe.

Spartak Moscow

Spartak will be playing in a classic red kit with the traditional white horizontal stripe and black details. It looks like a kit the fans should love, although some will demand that Nike move their logo to the centre, right above the Spartak diamond.

The club found an experiment with a black away kit successful and decided to repeat it. It’s a pity they didn’t try to resemble a legendary 1998 jersey, but this one looks great too.

FC Krasnodar

Fedor Smolov can make any shirt look sexy, so Puma didn’t have to try that hard. Anyway, Puma has made decent kits for Krasnodar, so the fans shouldn’t miss the former kit provider Kappa.bullshomebullsaway
Pavel Mamaev was originally suppposed to promote the new kits, but he washed himself away from the billboards with champagne splashes.

Zenit Saint Petersburg

Zenit travelled all the way to an oil platform in the Arctic to take promotional pictures of their new kits. One of the players who went there was Aleksandr Kokorin, and perhaps he learned a lesson or two about hard work. We can only hope so.

There is nothing special to say about the kits. They look great as usual, and it is obvious that the Nike designers took their time designing them. Never tortuous, always unique.

FC Rostov

While Zenit went the extra mile promoting their new kit, Rostov went with a slightly simpler approach.

Rostov’s boring kit presentation made Zenit’s social media team make a special presentation specially to Rostov fans.

CSKA Moscow

CSKA’s home kit has a classic look. It is not very clear why the goalkeeper jersey is in the same color though.

CSKA’s away kit has an outstanding print of a horse, which is the club symbol. It is a great example for all designers, who want to make a kit look strict and unique at the same time.
