ACL MD2 - GROUP E: SHANDONG LUNENG 1-4 JEONBUK HYUNDAI MOTORS
Jinan: Former champions Jeonbuk Motors maintained an unbeaten record in the AFC Champions League this season as second half goals from Han Kyo-won, Lee Jae-sung and Leonardo secured an eye-catching 4-1 away win over China’s Shandong Luneng on Tuesday.
Edu’s audacious first half chip had handed 2006 winners Jeonbuk the lead after 21 minutes only for Shandong’s Yang Xu to level the scores with his third goal in two games just before the hour mark.
But with Han, Lee and Leonardo netting inside the final 20 minutes, K-League Classic champions Jeonbuk added to last week’s goalless draw with Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol in Group E.
Chinese FA Cup winners Shandong, meanwhile, were unable to add to their opening day 3-2 win over Vietnam champions Binh Duong, as goalscorer Yang was dismissed with just over 10 minutes remaining for the home side.
Jeonbuk dominated the first half at Jinan Olympic Sports Centre and took the lead in spectacular fashion after 21 minutes as Brazilian forward Edu superbly chipped Shandong goalkeeper Wang Dalei from 25 yards despite the custodian standing on the edge of his six yard area.
Wang was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half with Edu’s compatriot Eninho also coming close in the opening 45 minutes.
But Shandong were able to make considerable improvements after half-time and equalised a minute after the hour mark as Zhang Wenzhao was able to bundle the ball back towards an onrushing Yang and the striker swept a first-time strike across Jeonbuk goalkeeper Kwoun Sun-tae and into the far corner.
Shandong, though, were back on level terms for just 10 minutes as Han fired through the legs of Wang from inside the area as Shandong allowed Lee to head across the face of goal to set up the Korea Republic international.
And Jeonbuk added a third just five minutes later as Wang could only palm Leonardo’s corner towards the edge of the penalty area and Lee was on hand to fire a first-time rising strike into the top corner.
Shandong’s hopes of another fightback were then made even harder as China intentional Yang, who came off the bench to score twice last week against Binh Duong, was sent-off after picking up a second yellow card with 11 minutes remaining after attempting to divert Walter Montillo’s free-kick into the net with his hand.
And Jeonbuk sealed the win in stoppage time as Leonardo fired high past Wang from inside the area.
ACL MD2 - GROUP B: NAFT TEHRAN 1-1 AL AIN
Tehran: Last year’s leading scorer Asamoah Gyan got off the mark in the 2015 edition of the AFC Champions League but inaugural winners Al Ain were again unable to pick up three points as they drew their second consecutive game with a 1-1 tie against Naft Tehran on Tuesday.
After a goalless first half, Naft defender Siamak Kooroshi scored within seconds of coming off the substitute’s bench on 49 minutes but Gyan, who netted 12 times on the continent last year, levelled for the visitors 10 minutes later.
Naft, who lost to Pakhtakor in last week’s Matchday One tie, were often indebted to their goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, who enjoyed a stellar showing against their Emirati guests, although the Iranian club are still without a win in their debut campaign.
And while the home side edged possession of the ball throughout long periods of the first half, it was the visitors who created most of the clear cut opportunities with many of them centering around 2014 AFC Foreign Player of the Year Gyan.
After just 10 minutes the Ghanaian striker had his first sight of goal as he spun on the ball 10 yards out but was denied by Beiranvand who dived to his left and forced the ball behind.
And the Naft goalkeeper had to be on his toes just three minutes later when a miskick from Mehdi Shiri saw the ball land at the feet of Ibrahim Diaky inside the penalty area but his half-volley was acrobatically turned over by Beiranvand.
For Naft, shots on target were few and far between in the first period, despite their attacking intent, although Iman Mobali did have a freekick on target that Khalid Eisa needed to punch away to safety.
Gyan, though, continued to look the biggest threat, and he almost turned provider on 33 minutes as he curled in a deft cross but Mohamed Abdulrahman, who had raced onto the ball in space, lifted his header narrowly over the crossbar.
And just before half-time, Gyan had the game’s best chance thus far as he out-paced both centrebacks and surged into the penalty area only to see the outstretched boot of a spread-eagled Beiranvand prevent his low shot from finding the net.
The stalemate, though, lasted for just four minutes of the second half as Kooroshi, who had only just entered the field for Amin Hajomohammadi, ghosted into the penalty area to head home Vahid Amiri’s long throw-in to put the hosts in front.
Naft’s joy was not to be long-lived, though, as a handball by Shiri inside the penalty area just before the hour mark gave Gyan another chance at ending Beiranvand’s defiance, and this time the goalkeeper was given no chance by the powerfully struck spot kick.
Amiri went close to putting the home side back in front with 15 minutes remaining from distance but Eisa tipped over the rising effort from the Iran international.
And Mobali then went within inches from seeing a freekick from distance creep in at the far post but despite the renewed attacking vigour from the hosts as the minutes ticked down, Naft were unable to find a second breakthrough and the sides shared the points.
ACL MD2 - GROUP E: KASHIWA REYSOL 5-1 BINH DUONG
Kashiwa: Masato Kudo scored twice as Kashiwa Reysol cruised to a 5-1 win over Vietnam’s Binh Duong as the J.League side maintained their unbeaten start to the 2015 AFC Champions League campaign at Hitachi Stadium on Tuesday.
Two goals late in the first half – from Kudo and an own goal by David Vrankovic – sent Reysol on their way to the win before efforts from Kim Chang-soo, Kudo and Hidekazu Otani ensured the 2013 semi-finalists claimed all three points.
Reysol, who kicked off their campaign with a draw against Jeonbuk Motors on Matchday One, were rarely troubled by a Binh Duong side who battled hard despite the gulf in class before claiming a late consolation through Ganiyu Bolaji Oseni.
Kashiwa were quick out of the blocks and Cristiano should have scored just four minutes into the game when he had time and space behind the Binh Duong defence to do better than fire over the bar, while four minutes later Yuki Otsu sent his effort wide from six yards out.
Otsu tried his luck from long range in the 12th minute as Reysol cruised through the opening phase of the game, with only Le Cong Vinh presenting any threat for the Vietnamese when his free kick was collected by Takanori Sugeno in the home side’s goal.
Reysol, though, continued to dictate the tempo of the game; Kudo’s header was weak and straight at Nguyen Quoc Thien Esele in the 25th minute while Eduardo should have scored when the goalkeeper dropped the ball at his feet, only to stab over the bar.
With six minutes to go and against the run of play, Cong Vinh created the best chance of the half but his curling effort from just inside the Reysol half was deflected wide of goal.
That finally nudged Reysol out of their slumber in front of goal and, in the 43rd minute, Kudo put the home side in front with a crisp finish to the goalkeeper’s left after a low, firm cross from the right by Cristiano.
Two minutes later, Tatsumi Yoshida’s team doubled their lead when Vrankovic headed into his own goal, ensuring the scoreline better reflected Reysol’s dominance.
Nguyen Thanh Son introduced Mai Tien Thanh at the start of the second half as the Binh Duong coach sought a way back into the game and, eight minutes after the restart, he went close to opening the Vietnamese side’s account, only for the midfielder’s spectacular effort to cannon back off the cross bar.
But the result was put beyond any doubt three minutes later when Kim Chang-soo latched onto Akimi Barada’s perfectly weighted through ball before slotting home.
Kudo claimed his second of the game with a close range header in the 67th minute after Otsu glanced Barada’s corner across the face of goal while, eight minutes later, Otani found the back of the net when his shot from outside the area was deflected past substitute goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong.
Oseni pulled one back for Binh Duong nine minutes from time when he was played in on goal by a well-placed pass from Cong Vinh before sliding a fine finish beyond Sugeno, but it was not enough to spark an unlikely revival.
