In the biggest example yet that not all players run their own social media accounts, this mistake was quickly picked up by supporters
The team behind Ilkay Gundogan’s social media accounts were left red-faced on Monday after mistakenly tweeting as Mesut Ozil.
While the former Borussia Dortmund star continues his recovery from injury as he settles into life at Manchester City, he suggested on Twitter that he was in the USA on Sunday.
Arsenal ended their pre-season tour Stateside in LA against Chivas, and apparently had Gundogan on the bench alongside the likes of Jack Wilshere and Petr Cech.
Evidently, the same team run both Gundogan’s and Ozil’s accounts, and sent out the wrong tweet and image on the former’s account.
Although it was only up on the feed for a few minutes, it was long enough for some eagle-eyed supporters to take a screenshot and ensure that the media team didn’t get away with it.
It isn’t the first time that this particular situation has arisen, with Paulo Dybala and Juan Manuel Iturbe’s PR company getting in a mix up last year.
Dispelling the suggestion that all players run their own social media accounts, the companies in question will be hoping to avoid similar blunders in the future.
