Neuer saves sluggish Bayern against upset-minded Ingolstadt

Bayern Munich recovered from the shock of falling behind after only eight minutes to win the Bavarian derby 3-1 against Ingolstadt. The visitors had the temerity to take the lead through Dario Lezcano, but Robert Lewandowski equalised just four minutes later. Second half goals from Xabi Alonso and Rafinha delivered Bayern all three points and returned the German champions to the top of the table.
Positives
Against a resolute Ingolstadt, sickness-ravaged Bayern were far from at their best, especially in defence minus skipper Philipp Lahm, David Alaba and Mats Hummels. But Champions have a gritty ability to grind out wins and the Champions-in-waiting got the job done to secure the three points.
Negatives
On a rainy Munich afternoon, Renato Sanches' home Bundesliga debut turned into a damp squib with another nervous display. Bayern were caught miserably on the break and conceded their first goal of the season. The visitors deserved at least a draw, managing the rare feat of firing more goal attempts than the record German champions (13-10).
Manager rating out of 10
Carlo Ancelotti, 8-- The Joy of Six. Ancelotti maintained his 100 per cent record after six games since joining the Bavarian giants after his sabbatical. Not a bad Bayern goal difference either -- 23 scored and just Saturday's one against.
Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):
GK Manuel Neuer, 9 -- Hailed once again by Ancelotti at the news conference following the game as "the best goalkeeper in the world" --Germany's new captain showed his supreme qualities to save Bayern's day. This was one of Neuer's special match-winning performances, pulling out a host of fine stops, the best of all, a brilliant reaction save to deny Australian striker Mathew Leckie just after Bayern had gone ahead.
DF Juan Bernat, 6 -- Replaced Alaba at left back, but Bernat couldn't provide any security in an unstable backline.
DF Joshua Kimmich, 6 -- After his first two Champions League goals in midweek from midfield, the 21-year-old German international proved his versatility by slotting into Mats Hummels' spot in central defence. Kimmich was continually tested and rarely looked comfortable as Bayern were stretched by the visitors.
DF Javi Martinez, 6 -- Bayern's record signing struggled to find his best form alongside some unfamiliar company at the back.
DF Rafinha, 7 -- A much-improved second half, regularly striding forward purposefully and crowned by firing a rare goal to clinch the three points.
MF Xabi Alonso, 7 -- Like fine Spanish wine, Alonso gets better with age. The 34-year-old fired Bayern into the lead with a superb strike from just outside the box, almost as good as his long-range effort in the season-opener.
MF Arturo Vidal, 6 -- The combative Chilean's toiled industriously but with very little end product.
MF Renato Sanches, 5 -- It's clearly a tough learning curve for the 19-year-old Portuguese prodigy, who failed to make a single tackle during his hour's stay on the pitch. He did fire off a hurried shot which went well wide of goal after a couple of minutes, but Sanches again struggled to impose himself and, on his home Bundesliga debut, he was hooked off for Thiago.
MF Franck Ribery, 8 -- The Frenchman supplied all three assists in a lively display. Ribery looks to "feeling the love" more this season from Ancelotti, than he did under predecessor Pep Guardiola, and the Italian is being rewarded with some top performances.
MF Kingsley Coman, 5 -- After picking up an ankle injury a month ago, Coman endured a disappointing return on his first appearance since the Super Cup win over Borussia Dortmund. After dithering on one too many occasions, Coman paid the price and was removed from the fray at half-time.
FW Robert Lewandowski, 8 -- With Bayern in early trouble, Lewandowski almost inevitably equalised with a technically brilliant finish, exquisitely lobbing the keeper with his weaker left foot to reach double figures for club and country this campaign. In fact, in a season and a bit, Lewandowski has now scored the same amount of league goals (35), that Ingolstadt have managed as an entire team since gaining promotion to the top-tier in 2015.
Substitutes:
MF Douglas Costa, 7 -- Breathed new life on the Bayern right flank after coming on at the break for the rusty Coman. But he succumbed to injury and went straight down the tunnel with seven minutes remaining. Bayern will hope it's nothing serious.
MF Thiago, 6 -- Pleasing on the eye as always after replacing the ineffective Sanches for the final half hour. Denied a goal soon after his introduction by a good save from the goalkeeper, but the Spanish international can also consider himself fortunate not to give away a penalty for a naïve challenge on the goalscorer Lezcano as Bayern battled manfully to hold onto the lead.
DF Jerome Boateng, NR -- First outing since tearing a muscle in Germany's Euro 2016 semifinal defeat vs. France in July. Boateng won an important challenge in the lead up to Rafinha's game-clinching goal and Ancelotti will be glad to have him back.
