Cubo Torres Signs With Houston Dynamo As Designated Player, Elects to Stay In MLS
Mexican international Torres has elected to sign with the American domestic league rather than returning to Chivas Guadalajara, his parent club.
It's official, Erick "Cubo" Torres is in MLS to stay. On Tuesday, theHouston Dynamo gave their fans an early Christmas present with the signing of Torres on a permanent transfer from Chivas de Guadalajara, his former parent club to a Designated Player Contract. Torres spent the 2014 MLS season on loan with Chivas USA, where he was a revelation, scoring 15 goals in 29 appearances.
MLSsoccer.com have confirmed that Torres has signed a five year deal with the Dynamo, and he is their first marquee signing of the offseason. In recent weeks, it had been rumored that he would move to either the LA Galaxy or Seattle Sounders but both teams passed up the opportunity to sign the Mexican.
The reason behind that was revealed by the league's official website, when they confirmed that MLS reached a transfer agreement with Chivas at the end of the 2014 season. After reaching the agreement, they approached all 20 MLS clubs and the Dynamo were: "the only team interested in Torres that was also ready to meet the transfer arrangements and player salary."
In a club statement, Torres spoke of his excitement at the impending move to Houston, saying: "I’m extremely excited to be joining the Houston Dynamo. It’s one of the premier clubs in MLS and a place where I really wanted to sign. I can’t wait to join my teammates in Houston and continue their success on the field."
Torres will be hopeful of bolstering a strikeforce which was one of the worst in MLS last season. The Dynamo scored only 39 goals last term, bad enough for fourth worst in the league. However, they will have to wait a bit longer for the reinforcement to arrive. As part of the transfer deal, Torres will be loaned back to Chivas for six months. At the conclusion of the loan, he can begin his career with the Dynamo.
In the same club statement, new Dynamo manager Owen Coyle said: "We are delighted to sign a such a talented young player with the scope and potential to improve further. For me, he is an outstanding player who does the toughest thing in soccer with ease, and that is to score goals. I look forward to working with him and helping to make him even better."
The signing with undoubtedly bolster not just the Dynamo but the foot-print of Mexican players in MLS. Torres has scored 22 goals in his MLS career, the most all-time from a Mexican player and this move will likely keep him firmly in the sights of national team manager Miguel Herrera. Torres has made three appearances for El Tri, scoring once.
