Ahli Al Khalil coach Ayman Sandouqa has targeted all three points when his team faces Group D leaders Al Muharraq on Wednesday as the Palestinian side aim to maintain their slender advantage over third-placed Al Jaish.
Bahrain’s Al Muharraq have already secured their place in the next round and a draw would guarantee home field advantage in the Round of 16 and leave the three remaining sides battling for second place.
Ahli Al Khalil are currently in second place on four points from three games, one more than Syria’s Al Jaish while Fanja from Oman are bottom of the group with a solitary point.
“We have no other option but to win the match. This is our only target tomorrow,” said Sandouqa(pictured). “We are ready for the match and we want to get the three points in order to maintain our chances of qualifying to the knockout stage.
“I hope that our players will avoid mistakes tomorrow especially in defence as this has affected us previously. I hope that the players will concentrate throughout the match in order to get a positive result.”
Al Muharraq will be without Abdulla Omar, who is suspended, but Jamal Rashed will return after missing the 2-0 win over Al Jaish on Matchday Four.
“The match tomorrow is important as we want to remain on top and qualify to the knockout stage as the best team in the group,” said Al Muharraq coach Isa Al Hamdani. “Our opponents are strong and they have caused a lot of problems for us in the previous match in Manama.
“Our players are ready although some of them have some slight knocks that might affect them in the match. We want to go far in the competition and hopefully tomorrow we will get another victory.”
Fanja entertain Al Jaish knowing they cannot afford any more slip-ups if they are to have any hope of reaching the last 16 and the Omani side’s hopes are hit by the absence due to suspension of Mauritanian defender El Mostapha Diaw.
“We will go into the match to win and get the three points which are important for us,” said coach Leandro Vieira. “We respect our opponents and we know that they are a good side but we have to concentrate fully on getting a victory tomorrow.
“We want to get the three points in order to revive our chances of going through to the next round in the competition. We have a lot of motivation and desire to win the match and hopefully the players will give their best.”
Al Jaish, like second-placed Ahli Al Khalil, have played a game fewer than Al Muharraq and Fanja and coach Ahmad Al Shaar is expecting a difficult task against the recently crowned Oman champions.
“Fanja are a good side and they recently won the league title which means that they will go into the match with good motivation and without any real pressure,” he said. “On the other hand, our players have a lot of responsibility to get a victory and they are under a lot of pressure.
“Tactically speaking it will be a very hard match for the two teams especially because Fanja haven’t had good results in the competition. I hope that our team can get a victory tomorrow in order to strengthen our position in the group.”
