Saida: Al Ahed coach Robert Jaspert is hoping his team can continue their impressive run of form to seal their place in the knockout stage of the 2016 AFC Cup when they take on Group A rivals Altyn Asyr on Tuesday.
The Lebanese outfit, who won their most recent domestic league match 3-1 over Al Nejmeh, lead the group by one point from Altyn Asyr and a win would guarantee Jaspert’s side a place in the knockout rounds.
“The match will be very hard as our opponents tomorrow are the only team that we failed to defeat previously,” said the German (pictured left), whose team lost 2-0 to Altyn Asyr when they met on Matchday One. “We respect our opponents and we must give our best if we want to win.
“We are in a good position now as we have registered several victories recently including the top match of the league against Nejmeh. We hope we can defeat Altyn Asyr and remain on top of the group as this will give us a good advantage in the next round.”
The Turkmenistan side are in second place in the group, three points adrift of Al Ahed and only a point clear of third-placed Al Wehdat from Jordan as the fight for the group’s two berths in the Round of 16 threatens to go down to the wire.
“There is no doubt that the match tomorrow will be very hard. We will be playing against a strong team who play well at home and in front of their fans.” said Altyn Asyr coach Dmitriy Korj.
“The match will be decisive for the group. The group is very tight as Al Ahed will secure their place in the knockout stage if they win while we will maintain our chances if we win or get a point. We are ready and hopefully we will be lucky and get a good result.”
Al Wehdat will take on Bahrain’s Al Hidd, who have picked up just one point so far, without the services of suspended Jordan international goalkeeper Amer Shafi while Mohammed Mustafa is also ruled out after picking up a second yellow card of the group stage against Altyn Asyr on Matchday Four.
“Al Hidd will go into the match holding on to their chances of qualifying to the knockout stage,” said Al Wehdat coach Raed Assaf. “We need to win the next two matches in order to secure our place in the next round as well and hopefully we can achieve our target.
“All the players are ready for the match. Although we will be missing key players, I’m confident the boys will put in a strong performance and we will go back home with a good victory and the three points.”
Al Hidd must win both of their remaining games to maintain any hope of staying in the competition and they will face Al Wehdat without midfielder Hamad Faisal, who is suspended.
“The match is very important and hopefully we will be ready,” said coach Salman Shareedah (pictured right). “The players are under a lot of pressure. They have played many matches in the league and in the AFC Cup as well, which doesn’t make things easy for us.
“We have experienced players who are capable of playing well. We had a good game when we previously met Al Wehdat in Jordan and I’m confident that we will have another strong display tomorrow.”
