LA settles for third straight draw, but reminds itself of improvement from last year

The LA Galaxy II’s third consecutive draw, this time a 1-1 stalemate against expansion San Antonio FC, was certainly a lost opportunity on Wednesday at StubHub Center. SAFC’s Carlos Alvarez equalized in the 89th minute to help his side gain a road point.
Afterward, Galaxy II Head Coach Curt Onalfo reminded everyone about where this club was at this stage last year as LA ended up reaching the 2015 USL Championship. Last year, the Galaxy II were 1-3-1 through five games. This year, the club is 2-0-3 and atop the Western Conference.
“We’re getting better each day and sometimes you have little hiccups and you learn from it,” Onalfo said. “We’re further ahead than we were last year at this point, so we’ve just got to keep pushing and keep getting better, and keep learning and keep developing.”
That isn’t to say Onalfo didn’t hammer home the point that with a late lead, thanks to Jack McBean’s first-half goal, the squad should have finished things off. Onalfo and the organization are hopeful that a number of his players will make their way permanently to the Galaxy first team, and his message was terse.
“I just gave them an earful because I want them to know that those moments,” Onalfo said. “If that happens with the first team and you’re the guy that’s not picking up the player that’s scoring, you’re going to lose your place in the team.”
It has been two weeks since LA posted a 3-0 victory against Saint Louis FC on March 30 to start the season at 2-0-0. The club’s next chance to get back into the winning side will come against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 next Friday, April 22.
The offense has been there. The focus is primarily on finishing.
“We’ve just got to close out games,” McBean said. “We’re scoring enough goals. We’ve just got to be a little bit sharper in the final third to put the games away earlier and close them out when they’re tight ones.”
