Man United manager Louis van Gaal has justified reasons why he plays players out of position and insist it depends on position vacancies in the team.
Many United players have suffered playing out of natural positions, the likes of Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young are victims.
Van Gaal played Ghanaian-Dutch full-back, Timothy Fosu-Mensah as central back against West Ham United instead of his natural left-back role.
“Players in my squad are playing in different positions than what they are used to in their former careers,” when asked about experimenting players position.
“When there is a vacancy and you think a young player has the quality to play there, you give him the chance and he takes it.”
“You can ask Bastian Schweinsteiger who, at Bayern Munich, played on the right side. I made him a centre midfielder because I looked at his profile and I thought he can better play in the middle and he enjoys it more.”
Van Gaal’s squad have seen many youngsters getting starting roles and been impressive, one of them is Marcus Rashford who has netted seven goals in 12 games and ahead of the FA Semi-final game against Everton on Saturday, the Dutchman believes his team should contain both senior and junior players.
“The younger players are always a stimulus in the group and that is very important, “he said. I think also that you have to have a mix of older and younger players in your team.
“When I was at Bayern it was Thomas Muller, at Barcelona it was Xavi and Andres Iniesta. I have lots of examples.”
