Turkey clinched third spot in Group D, but now need Belgium to beat Sweden and several combinations of results in Group F to qualify
Turkey came back from the dead – but must wait to see if they have made the last 16.
Fatih Terim’s side notched their first goals and points of the finals as they finally clicked after two defeats.
While they did not get the four goals they needed to guarantee progress, they did secure a commanding win.
The result did Northern Ireland a big favour, meaning they will go to the knockout stage as a third-place qualifier.
Turkey now need Belgium to beat Sweden and several combinations of results in Group F.
They were one of only three nations yet to score, but their drought ended after 10 minutes.
Burak Yilmaz, their top scorer in qualifying for France, slotted home at the near post after an excellent run and cross from the new Borussia Dortmund midfielder Emre Mor.
A second was needed and arrived after 65 minutes. Ozan Tufan was the man to blast home past Petr Cech from eight yards out, despite twice looking offside as a free kick was floated into the box.
Turkey’s star man was Mor, who went through his full repertoire of tricks, with flicks and skills that lit up the game.
If they progress, he is one to watch.
