ORLANDO, Fla. -- A frustrated Orlando City SC crashed out of the US Open Cup at home to the NASL’s Fort Lauderdale Strikers after falling victim to a classic smash and grab raid in extratime of a game they totally dominated for long periods.
Victor ‘PC’ Giro scored a stunning solo goal from 20 yards in the very last minute of the extra period to leave the Lions stymied by their own poor finishing and some inspired goalkeeping by Diego Restrepo.
The game’s big flashpoint arrived in the 65th minute, though, as City goalscorer Kevin Molinoclashed with Victor ‘PC’ Giro, with Fort Lauderdale’s Maicon Santos stepping in to add to the flare-up. After all the dust from an angry melee had settled, both Molino and Santos were shown straight red cards and the game became increasingly chippy.
Orlando did everything but score in the final 20 minutes of regulation as they laid siege to the Strikers' goal, with Hadji Barry curling a shot off the bar and late substitute Cyle Larin heading just over as the visitors seemed content to hold out for the extra period.
Early on, a much-changed City were distinctly subdued, and it showed as they fell behind to Jose Angulo’s 12th-minute goal, latching onto a simple ball over the top and beating goalkeeperEarl Edwards Jr. with ease.
That stirred the Lions – who were minus seven regular starters – into action and Molino replied with a superb individual effort, winning the ball mid-way inside the Strikers' half and then running through the heart of the defense before slotting the ball home just three minutes later.
The Strikers now go on to visit the Chicago Fire for the US Open Cup quarterfinals, on July 19 or 20.
